When Pittsburgh's Conor Sheary ended it 34 seconds into overtime to give the Penguins a chaotic 8-7 victory over the Washington Capitals, Sheary's teammates darted for the tunnel while Washington stood on the bench a little dumbstruck after their nine-game winning streak came to an abrupt - if highly entertaining - halt. Sheary had two goals and an assist for the Penguins, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Evgeni Malkin picked up his 11th career hat trick during a frenetic second period, and Sidney Crosby collected his NHL-leading 27th goal to go with three assists.
The Anaheim Ducks seek to continue their defensive resurgence when they face the desperate Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night at the Honda Center. The Lightning began a six-game road trip that will cover 13 days with a 2-1 win Monday against the Los Angeles Kings -- and without two of their top players, Steven Stamkos and Ryan Callahan. The possible absence of All-Star defenseman Victor Hedman could make matters worse.
The Detroit Red Wings could move Thomas Vanek by the March 1 trade deadline if their postseason streak appears to be doomed. In the meantime, Vanek is putting together a nice season. The 32-year-old winger increased his potential appeal on Monday, scoring late in the second period to help Detroit to a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
