D Chris Chelios' 10-year career in Detroit is over -- the club has elected not to offer him a contract for next season -- but the 47-year-old will try to sign with another team, preferably in the Eastern Conference. With his unparalleled commitment to fitness and conditioning, Chelios is the second-oldest player in NHL history, behind only Gordie Howe, who retired at 52. But in his 25th NHL season, Chelios appeared in only 28 games during the regular season and six in the playoffs. He ranks fourth all-time in games played with 1,644 -- trailing only Howe (1,767), Mark Messier (1,756) and Ron Francis (1,731) -- and is the NHL's all-time leader in playoff games (266). |
