C Vinny Prospal has been designated as the Rangers' second alternate captain, joining winger Ryan Callahan as captain Chris Drury's top lieutenants. Head coach John Tortorella had named only Callahan on Oct. 2, allowing the second candidate to emerge before settling on Prospal, who played five seasons for Tortorella in Tampa Bay. Prospal has 18 points in 16 games with the Rangers.
"It's not just my decision, it was a group of us," Tortorella said. "I would've gone the whole year (with Callahan as the lone alternate). We just felt that it was not just (Prospal's) play on the ice, that's not what was most important; it's his practice habits, preparation and other things that make him most deserving."
