Teams that have come back from 3-0 in playoffs
The Stanley Cup Playoffs looked grim for the Chicago Blackhawks. The defending champions limped in to the playoffs and dropped their first three games against the top seeded Vancouver Canucks. However, Chicago followed a 7-2 win in Game 4 with a 5-0 win in Game 5. Now, all the momentum is in their favor. They have owned Vancouver in the playoffs the past few seasons, and that could work to their advantage. Chicago still has a lot of work to do, but they have a shot at joining the short list of teams to win a series after trailing 3-0. Here is a look at the teams that did it.
The Philadelphia Flyers were getting crushed by the Boston Bruins. They trailed 3-0 in the series entering Game 4 at home. The Flyers managed to force overtime and win that game. They then easily beat Boston in Game 5 on the road and Game 6 at home. That set up a memorable Game 7 in Boston. The Bruins took a quick 3-0 lead, but the Flyers rallied to tie. A late penalty for having too many men on the ice helped the Flyers score the winning goal to complete the comeback.
In what might be the most famous series in the history of sports, the Boston Red Sox made history against the New York Yankees. The Yankees won Game 3 in Boston 19-8, and the Red Sox looked dead. But they wont the next two games in extra innings to get back to New York. The Red Sox won Game 6 behind Curt Schilling and his bloody sock, then routed the Yankees in Game 7.
The New York Islanders looked dead in the water after falling behind the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0. But the Islanders were able to rally, allowing just four goals in the last four games. The shut out the Penguins 1-0 in Game 7. The Islanders nearly made history in the next round. They fell behind the Flyers 3-0, but won the next three games before losing in Game 7.
The first 3-0 comeback took place way back in the Original Six era of hockey. The Detroit Red Wings took a 3-0 lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs. After winning Game 4, the Maple Leafs scored nine goals in a Game 5 win. Detroit would score just one total goal in Game 6 and Game 7. That enabled Toronto to complete the comeback.
