Modano named captain of Team USA for World Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Ticker) - Center Mike Modano, who played on the United States’ Olympic teams in 1998 and 2002, was named captain of the U.S. team that will compete in the 2005 World Championship in Austria.

The announcement was made Thursday by U.S. coach Peter Laviolette.

“Mike is a player our team looks up to,” said Laviolette, who guided the American team to the bronze medal at the World Championship last year. “He leads both on and off the ice, and that is extremely important.”

Modano, 34, has competed in nine USA Hockey events, three more than any other player on the roster.

The captain of the Dallas Stars, Modano has recorded 1,106 points in 1,101 career NHL games with the franchise.

The U.S. will begin play in the 16-nation event on May 1 against Slovenia in Innsbruck, Austria.
