Bryzgalov signs three-year contract
GLENDALE, ARIZONA (TICKER) —After facing an uncertain future just two months ago, Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov can start making long-term plans in the desert.
The Coyotes on Tuesday signed the 27-year-old Bryzgalov, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent following this season, to a three-year contract.
The team did not disclose financial terms, but TSN of Canada reported that the contract is worth $12.75 million.
“We are pleased to sign Ilya to a long-term contract,” Phoenix general manager Don Maloney said. “He’s a world class goaltender with a Stanley Cup on his resume and has been a great addition to our hockey club.”
Bryzgalov was waived by the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks on November 16, only to be claimed by the Coyotes the next day. He responded by stopping all 27 shots that same day in a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Since being acquired by Phoenix, Bryzgalov is 16-10-2 with a 2.38 goals-against average over his 28 games with the Coyotes.
After finishing last in the Western Conference a year ago with 67 points, the Coyotes have shown improvement this season. They already have 52 points, leaving them just three points out of a playoff spot.
“I am excited to sign with the Phoenix Coyotes,” Bryzgalov said. “I’m thrilled about our team, coaches and management. I chose to stay in Phoenix because I love our fans, my teammates and I’m confident that we have a bright future ahead of us.”
Bryzgalov played in five playoff games for Anaheim last season, posting a 3-1-0 record with a 2.25 GAA and .922 save percentage.
This season, he posted a 2-3-1 record and 2.55 GAA in nine games as Jean-Sebastien Giguere’s backup before getting waived by the Ducks.
