RW Murray to challenge Bruins
BOSTON (TICKER) —While his career with the team is over, Glen Murray is not through dealing with the Boston Bruins.
According to a report by the Boston Herald on Wednesday, Murray is seeking full payment for the final year of his contract that was bought out by the Bruins over the summer due to a pre-existing injury.
After recording 17 goals and 13 assists in 63 games last season, the 35-year-old Murray was bought out of his contract in July, receiving two-thirds of the $4.1 million he was slated to make in 2008-09. By doing so, Boston saved $1.38 million - which Murray now is looking to recoup.
The native of Halifax, Nova Scotia suffered an ankle injury last season that has not healed, according to the Herald, and is expected to undergo another surgery next week. He originally had a procedure performed on the ankle in April.
Therefore, Murray believes the Bruins should pay him the full amount of the last year of his contract, as buying out a player with an existing injury is not allowed.
However, Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli does not think his team acted wrongly.
“I haven’t seen all the facts on what they’re claiming, but they are claiming we bought him out improperly,” Chiarelli told the Herald. “Outside of one letter from his agent, that’s all I’ve heard. We’ve done everything according to the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and the standard players contract, so I don’t think there’s going to be an issue.”
Murray skated over the summer in an attempt to land a job with another team. According to the Herald, he reportedly was telling clubs he was healthy and ready to go, which directly conflicts with his current claim.
Drafted 18th overall by Boston in 1991, Murray has recorded 337 goals and 314 assists in 1,009 career games with the Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings. The two-time All-Star enjoyed his best season with Boston in 2002-03, when he registered career highs of 44 goals and 92 points.
