Maple Leafs Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

Some Maple Leafs have come in from the cold, courtesy of coach Ron Wilson.

A couple of lineup changes for Monday’s game against the Thrashers coincided with a 5-2 win, and no one was happier than defenseman Garnet Exelby(notes), who had sat 11 of the last 15 games but was brought back to face his old team.

“I’m not happy sitting out every night, bottom line,” Exelby said before the game. “(Our) team has been doing better, absolutely, which is great, but I don’t want to be a spare part, sitting around the press box, secluded from the team.

“It’s funny how things change. When I was in Atlanta last year, things were going well at the end of the season. Now I’m here and not playing. It’s not the way I expected to start my tenure with the Leafs, but that’s the way it is right now.”

He played almost 14 minutes and led the Leafs with six hits. Jeff Finger(notes) was a healthy scratch in his place.

Center Rickard Wallin(notes) was also gathering dust in the press box after eight games, but with the demotion of winger Christian Hanson(notes), his fourth-line job opened up again.

Not only did the Leafs win Monday, they spoiled the return of two former players, center Nik Antropov(notes) and defenseman Pavel Kubina(notes). The latter had an assist but was minus-3. The Leafs are home to the Islanders on Wednesday, the second of eight home games this month.

Maple Leafs 5, Thrashers 2:   A season-high single-period outburst of five goals sent the Leafs to just their third home win of the season and first on a weekday.

Two goals 28 seconds apart by LW Alexei Ponikarovsky(notes) completed the assault that drove starting Atlanta G Ondrej Pavelec(notes) to the bench for the third period. After leading the NHL with a 34.2 shots-per-game average and not having many regulation wins for their trouble, the Leafs did all their scoring on 12 second-period shots.

RW Lee Stempniak(notes), C Matt Stajan(notes) and C Mikhail Grabovski(notes) had the other goals. G Vesa Toskala(notes), who hadn’t had a two-goal lead to work with in 11 previous games, made 22 saves for the win.

NOTES, QUOTES

• D Ian White(notes) is as mystified as anyone as to why the Leafs have won just 19 home games since October 2008. It’s a given Leafs fans will keep buying tickets, but they’re often ragging their own team and rarely make the kind of noise heard in other cities.

“What are you going to do?” White said. “They’re going to be the way they are. So enjoy it, whether they’re cheering or jeering. Just be happy that we’re playing in the biggest hockey market on the planet, going out in front of 19,500 every night. I look at that as a positive and it helps me.

“Leaf Nation is pretty faithful. Almost every road trip we go on there are a couple of hundred if not a few thousand fans. It’s a very encouraging feeling.”

• Monday’s 5-2 win over Atlanta put the Leafs just five points out of a playoff spot, though six teams remain ahead of the Leafs. But it’s quite an improvement on the situation from a few weeks ago.

“If I were to turn the newspaper upside down where the standings are, I might see we’re at the top,” coach Ron Wilson said. “But I’m not counting, ‘Now we’re five, now we’re four, now we’re three.’ I’m not going through that. That’s for the last month of the schedule.”

• G Vesa Toskala has never lost to the Thrashers in regulation in nine games.

Quote To Note:   “The big thing for us is to follow up with good games.”—RW Lee Stempniak on the Leafs’ difficulty winning back-to-back this season.

the only truth cathypare65 has exposed is that she's a significant part of the reason why guys don't take girls seriously when it comes to hockey conversations...that and clearly she enjoys the negative attention she receives by flaming leafs fans on leafs subject links.
    *sigh* pretty sad really...

tradeing picks are a gamble. plain and simple. it can go either way. like alexandre daigle for ottawa. was supposed to be the next gretzky back in the 90's. he did not even play many nhl seasons and produced next to nothing. on the other hand look what you can do with the draft picks year after year like the penguins have done. some of the best players in the nhl was not even drafted in the top 5 or even 10 for that matter. just something to think about.

Listen GSM...Toronto and Montreal have met 7 times for the Stanley Cup finals. Score stands at Toronto 4 / Montreal 3 and we would have added another one if the ref didn't screw up in 93. As for this year...look at the stats...Montreal has LOST more games than the Leafs and look out Habers...here come the BUDS!!!

    #55 Goalerman....

Nicely placed comment!! By reading it, I gather you are not a Leaf fan but you are a realistic observer… Leaf fans should know that we are probably not going to the playoffs this year but they are going in the right direction. Getting a player of Kessel’s calibre is huge and something we needed badly. Without him, why would any free agent want to come and play on a team of 3rd and 4th line players?? The Draft is a crap shoot unless you’re a team like the Penguins who finished last for a few years straight, Leaf’s nation wouldn’t tolerate being last year-in and year-out… Burke’s a GM who is always looking to make moves so I’m pretty sure more deals are on the way. For years while JFJ was in charge we were calling for his head to roll and a GM with experience would be brought in. Well we get one of the best out there and people are scrutinizing his every move. Let’s wait a few years and see how it all turns out, I for one am very confident that we’ll have a good competitive team for years to come… All we can do is wait to see…

Typical of reactionary Leaf fans, way too much is being made of Burke's decision to move the first pick for Kessel. For starters, it's not as if he traded the pick for a bag of pucks. Kessel is a top quality player who is paying immediate dividends and will continue to produce for the leafs for years to come. While "rebuilding" definitely implies an overhaul of the scouting system within an organization and most certainly requires drafting wisely, it does not preclude free agent signings. One needs only look to teams like the Flyers, Ducks and Red Wings as examples of teams who supplement good draft picks with key free agent signings. Make no mistake, "rebuild" does not mean you have to do it entirely via the entry draft, and wthout a Phil Kessel type player there would be little or no incentive for free agents to sign here. Second, as a Flyers fan living in Toronto, allow me to remind everyone in Leaf Nation that Philadelphia finished dead last three seasons ago and, thanks to the weighted lottery system now in place in the NHL, did NOT get the first overall pick. Holmgren, as a rookie GM, was able to turn them around overnight, so why does everyone want to question a seasoned GM like Burke given his track record? And so I say to all you Leaf's fans out there: F*&%ing RELAX ALREADY...your team sucks now but it won't be that long before the Leafs are getting knocked out of the playoffs by the Flyers again!

"Toronto, which gave its first pick next year and in 2010 to Boston for Phil Kessel(notes), heads into the game in 30th and last place—in other words, handing the rights to projected No. 1’s Taylor Hall (Windsor OHL) and Tyler Seguin (Plymouth OHL) to the Bruins."

I am sick of people talknig like the season is over and the draft picks have already been decided! There is still 75% of the games left to play! From watching the Leafs and how close MOST of their games have been, I don't see them finishing in the bottom 5...Heck they aren't even THAT far out of the playoffs (it was 10 points last I checked). I don't expect them to make the playoffs, but I HIGHLY doubt they bottom feed all year! My gamble would be for Boston to a pick somewhere around 6-15.

This was highly entertaining reading "Cathy" pretend she knows anything about hockey, and insult pretty much all of leaf nation. Im going to get right to the point here.. Cathy is obviously somekind of closet leaf fan, im pretty sure this is the LEAF team report page... Do you miss Komiserek already?
I guess your team lasks such luster that you need to follow the leafs to see something entertaining.

Now I am not going to hab bash here, thats not my intent. Both leafs, and habs are 2 of the best franchises in NHL history.

I also take incredible exception to you saying Curtis Joseph is an average goaltender.
May I add that he owns and olympic GOLD medal? won a spengler cup, 50 career shutouts, and lifetime GAA 2.8, and is likely going to be in the hall of fame?

Cathy, just because you dont like the leafs, doesnt mean you shouldn't have respect for the great players that have worn the blue and white. And for the record montreal isnt all that special, your team is as bad as the leafs. But leafs have one thing you dont... there not french. haha.

    enjoy your poutine.

I look at the 20 names of players on this roster and I don't see a 'best player'. Every single one is a journeyman/grinder. There is no leader. No playmaker. No goal scorer. No one with 'heart'. No terrific defenseman or goalie. Who assembled this group? Where was his head? Who can intelligently think this group can win half its games and/or make the playoffs?

DOC, I wouldnt blame Beauchemin yet. It's not his fault he has been on the ice for most of the goals against. The rest of the D (Komisarek especially) is too busy taking dumb penalties. Beauch just has the dumb luck of being one of the better D left to kill all the penalties. Also, the forwards are not helping much at all defensively. It's really a "Team" failure

When the season starts and we play you guys then talk, yeah we've rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt. I cant wait to see the ambulance and the ems team work for their money when we play the pygmy habs. Good luck finding your teeth on the ice.
