Islanders Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

The Islanders are a long way from determining their approach to the March 3 trading deadline.

But what if their surprising .500 record—they are 8-8-7 entering Monday’s visit to Toronto—translates into them being positioned to be buyers with a chance to accelerate their rebuilding plan?

“There are no financial handcuffs, for lack of a better term,” GM Garth Snow told Newsday. “I’ve always been given the freedom from (owner) Charles (Wang) to spend if I see a fit.

“I don’t think we’re in a situation right now to make that decision. When that time comes, we’ll make it.”

Last season finished with the Islanders, whose current payroll of $44 million is barely above the salary-cap floor—posting the worst record in the NHL.

But Snow already has seen enough improvement—led by lottery pick John Tavares(notes), emerging stars Matt Moulson(notes) and Kyle Okposo(notes) and veteran goalies Dwayne Roloson(notes) and Martin Biron(notes)—to think the best is yet to come for the Isles later this season.

“Like I said when we were 0-4-4 this season, I believe in the guys on this team,” Snow said. “And I still believe we should have a better record than we have. We can get better, and we will get better.”

Blues 4, Islanders 1:   The Islanders appeared to have run out of gas in the penultimate game of a seven-game road trip. After earning points in the first four games of the trek (2-0-2), the Isles blew a third-period lead Friday in Minnesota before listlessly dropping their second in succession one night later in St. Louis.

“It definitely wasn’t our game tonight,” Isles forward Trent Hunter(notes) said. “Sometimes it takes a few minutes to get your legs going after playing the night before, but that wasn’t the case. We can’t use that as an excuse that we played (Friday) night.”

NOTES, QUOTES

• LW Jeff Tambellini(notes) had been scratched in each of the previous four games despite a recent stretch in which he scored six goals in five appearances. But the skilled winger returned to the Isles’ lineup Saturday in St. Louis.

“There have definitely been some peaks and valleys (this season),” Tambellini told Newsday. “It’s been eventful, but I choose to take the positives from it.”

• RW Blake Comeau(notes), whose late turnover led to the tiebreaking goal for Owen Nolan(notes) in the closing minutes of regulation Friday night in Minnesota, was a healthy scratch Saturday against St. Louis.

Quote To Note:   “That was the case. You never feel good about saying that, but when you’re the road team, you have to be the harder-working team.”—Center Josh Bailey(notes), when asked whether the Islanders were outworked in a 4-1 loss Saturday to St. Louis.

ROSTER REPORT

Goaltenders:   Dwayne Roloson, Martin Biron.

Third Line:   Jeff Tambellini, Josh Bailey, Trent Hunter.

Fourth Line:   Jon Sim(notes), Nate Thompson(notes), Tim Jackman(notes).

Player Notes:

• G Dwayne Roloson, who had lost just once in regulation in his first 12 appearances (6-1-5) for the Islanders, allowed four goals on 26 shots in a 4-1 loss Saturday in St. Louis.

• C Josh Bailey scored in his second straight game and for the fourth time in his last 10 appearances.

• LW Sean Bergenheim, who scored a career-high 15 goals last season, has just two in 23 games.

Medical Watch:

• G Rick DiPietro(notes), who hasn’t play since Jan. 5 of last season due to lingering effects from multiple surgeries on his right knee, has resumed practicing but isn’t expected back until at least late November.

• D Radek Martinek(notes) suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Nov. 6 against New Jersey and will miss the remainder of the season.

• C Doug Weight(notes) suffered an undisclosed upper body injury Nov. 6 and is expected to be out until mid-December.

I'm not sure that Dumont is a BIG BUST. He has 12 points in 11 games this year for an offensively weak Nashville team. He also has averaged .68 points per game during his career which isn't the worst out there by far. I live in Pgh but I love NY and keep up with the Isles and I too think they are a team on the rise...good enough for me to add Ricky to my FT. They remind me of what the Pens were a few years back. A very talented offensive team that must strengthen their blue line to be a serious threat in the playoffs. They surely will bring DiPietro along at the right pace and they will win a lot of games when he returns if they continue to get early leads.

@ yank1954, Joel Rechlicz is a true heavy weight, and Jackman is no slouch, throw in Witt and Sutton, and Tavares has plenty of protection.

To everyone who complains about the rick dipietro contract hear this: almost all above avg. goalies in the nhl have short term contracts averaging anywhere from 5.5-8 million a seaso (see martin Brodeur 5.5 and the new roberto luongo contract for 7.5 a year) the isles are paying a way above average goalie (albeit he has injury problems no argument there) 4.5 million a year. IF and i mean if he does pan out to fulfill his potential the isles will be paying a over 35 win goalie 4.5 a year to Luongo's 7.5....not a bad move to me

The Isles were in alot of games late, until there lack of experience caused them to lose.Combine the fact that those kids(with very little help in goal!) got tons of experience and now know what it takes to win and the addition of Tavares (who will be counted on to score...just score- they should be able to be significantly better. With Ricky in net (hopefully) and everyone contributing even more scoring wise(since they won't have to worry about the net as much) this team is on the brink. If they can stay healthy and everyone, including Tavares, lives up to their potential-it should be a very rewarding, and entertaining year. Go Isles!!!!!!!!

gainey took over near the end....team didnt get the job done....i am sure that behind closed doors, these players heard it from gainey....some i am sure had a few words to say about the boss....gainey being the leader he has always been...didnt waste time ,dismanteling the team, just to let everyone know who is in charge....it didnt have to do with money or not being talented enough,,but rather what gainey heard from these players...mr.gainey has always been well respected by teammates and is a gentleman in society,as i had the chance to meet him some 25 years ago in vancouver.if only these players nowdays had half the heart when playing and stopped counting every dime, the game would be much better for all.sure i dont totally agree with what we got in return( would have prefered a more high name profile scorer)but gainey didnt win all those cups in montreal and built the stars into a championship team cause he lacks the knowledge of the game..if u read two comments below,u will see what i think about the changes...as far as what the other person commented below me,, i agree with him..ever since betman came into OUR game,it has become the american attitude game, which simply is,make sure all fans from all cities are happy and have the cup rotating every year..THE STANLEY CUP is made for dynasties...and even when the islanders and oilers were winning,,, i still was ok ,cause at least the cup was going to a true championship team. i was so disgusted when the ducks won,carolina,tampa.....i mean,,how disrespectful for the cup...not that i have anything against these teams,,,but i just cant absorb having a team win the cup and then missing the playoffs the next year.its then not by chance that when we did have dynasties,,,players would stick with the club like a family,,,and played together thru good and bad with minor changes to the club....and this was done even when teams didnt win,,,,they kept their core players....the game had a meaning....hockey for me isnt just having my team win the cup,,,,but rather having the feeling that the game has a true meaning...a team is a team! i am sure many people have noticed these changes...but if we dont stop with the money issue,,,the game will only get worse with more teams changing players like they change their socks....how do we solve it??? firstly, stop charging the fans 100bucks to see a game...go back to the 8-20buck tickets.....players will know what income the owners get....max the salary cap at 1 million for a player,,,,and whoever doesnt like it,,can always work at mcdonalds for 6 bucks hr........lets live the 70s again....when the game had passion and meaning,,,when buying a hockey card was tresure....when anticapating hockey night in canada was a religion.....bring the game back to canada....play it cause u love it and not love it because u can buy a ferrari from it!

Why we would we get another defensemen when the team is in desprete need for a consistant points producer Tavares looks to be the guy in this situation but who knows every draft pick is a gamble and that second place finnish would be sweet but we need a real goal scorer and we need Ricky to be healthy. I knew that riddiculas contract would bite us in the ass.

Don't worry guys and girls. The Islanders will do great this coming season. With the experience the youngsters gained last season, and what the veterans went through last season, there will be a hunger to do well next season. Mark my words, the Islanders will finish 2nd in the standings behind Pittsburgh in the 2009 - 2010 season.
