Wild Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

From a coach’s point of view, it’s not an ideal approach. Still, Wild coach Todd Richards can’t argue with the results. His team is demonstrating an increasing flair for the dramatic, using its growing confidence to post come-from-behind victories as it continues to find its stride.

The Wild’s 5-4 shootout victory over Anaheim on Friday was simply the latest. In eight of its 12 wins, the Wild has fallen behind. In three of those, it has rallied from at least two goals down. Though the Wild has surrendered the first goal in seven of its past eight games, its players now have the belief that nothing is lost until the game is over.

“When we were 3-8 or 3-9, there wasn’t a lot of confidence in the room,” Richards said. “You could feel it; it was like a dark cloud. They were waiting for something bad to happen. (Friday), the guys on the bench were very positive, saying there was lots of time left and they were going to come back. The players believe they can score goals now.”

Mikko Koivu’s(notes) line has fostered much of that. Friday, Koivu and linemates Antti Miettinen(notes) and Andrew Brunette(notes) combined for four goals, five assists and 16 shots in a dominant performance. Miettinen also was among the players chattering on the bench.

“You’ve got to stay with it for 60 minutes,” he said. “In the past, maybe we got down a little bit. You’ve just got to stay with it for the full game.”

Wild 5, Ducks 4  (SO): Twice, the Wild fell behind by two goals. Twice, it rallied, earning its first four-game winning streak of the season. After spotting Anaheim a 2-0 lead, the Wild tied the score early in the third with a pair of goals by linemates Mikko Koivu and Antti Miettinen. The Ducks promptly made it 4-3, only to have the same two Wild players score again to push the game to overtime.

Miettinen’s power-play goal with 1:41 remaining in regulation allowed the Wild to earn points for the sixth consecutive game. The Wild begins an eight-day, five-game road trip with a record of 5-0-1 in its past six.

NOTES, QUOTES

• The Wild has won its past four games, marking the first time it has done so under first-year coach Todd Richards. The team had not won four in a row since October 2008.

• After beginning the season with eight consecutive road losses, the Wild is 3-1-2 in its past six away from home. It begins an eight-day, five-game road trip Saturday, its second-longest of the season. The team went 0-5 on an 11-day trip in October.

Quote To Note:   “It was by far the best I’ve seen Mikko play. He was a dominant, dominant player (Friday night).”—Wild coach Todd Richards on center Mikko Koivu, who led the Wild’s shootout victory over Anaheim with two goals, an assist and nine shots in 21 minutes, 58 seconds of ice time.

I bought season tickets going into this season knowing it was a rebuilding year. I'm in the corner 4 rows up from the glass on the side the Wild defend twice. Every game I've gone to they've won so far. And despite not playing their best hockey and losing games, I'll still be excited and glad to be a part of the Team of 18,000. We've got all the weapons, we're just figuring out how to use them, and when!

Bouchard will be an excellent play maker once he returns from his injury.

I agree, give it some time. I follow the Sharks and we're about to win the Cup due to not making drastic changes when the fans want the orginazation to do so.

I love when people constantly complain about how the organization is run and what's going on within the organization (ex: comments 1 and 2). Seriously, do you work for them, do you live religiously around the Wild or something? If not, then shut the hell up, my god. I can easily admit I have no clue around whats going on, but I can say that hopefully we'll climb up out of this slump and Richards and the team get us into playoff contention. It's his and the first season of rebuilding for the Wild, give it some time...

I believe it will take a minimum of 2 seasons to implement Todd Richards system. It seems the main problem in the past was NOT Lemaires defense first philosophy but the Wilds extremely poor draft strategies! Drafting several goalies when the cupboards were already overflowing goaltending-wise?Drafting defensemen early each draft when the lack of scoring was a desperate need? Seems the scouting department needs to accept more than its share of the blame for the current situation and depleted talent stock.

Was it last season when the wild won 2 games in Dec. 2008? I think it was, and we finished 2 points shy. So, shut the hell up and watch.

Its the beginning of the season, we have a few key injuries, and learning a new system with a a lot of new faces. And yet some of you "True" Wild fans are already jumping ship because they aren't winning every game?

If you've paid attention AT ALL the last few years you'd realize that we have gone from a defensive minded team, to focusing more on scoring, and that's not easy to do after 9 years.

But hey, since you obviously aren't real Wild fans (or know anything about hockey), then do what everyone else does in your position. Buy a red wings jersey and try to convince people that you not just jumping on their bandwagon. Cuz we sure as hell don't want you on ours.

the guys passing was horrible last night and were way to slow and not in the game , but our power play showed life, which i'm glad to see. i don't care what people think, the wild will break out of this, i trust Fletcher, and being a Minnesotan, i know we can rise up and kick some ass.

There are no real superstars left in Wild... Disappointing... JL could try to get at least some start, but without a real offense superstar, Wild will end up nowhere...

ok first i was a big fan of JL i like him when he was with the devils and at the time his trap was great but guess what hockey has changed over the last couple of years the style of play has changed thou out the league and new rules changed it to (no 2 line pass anymore).so i respect JL and am happy he was the our first coach, one thing i didnt like what he did was that rotate captain thingy you need to pick one person and stay with it ok enough about him.second it time for a change and so far i like the new gm vision for wild hockey and i hope they get a good coach that knows his stuff and i hope the can attract some good free agents that will make the team better.third i would love the wild get rid of Gaborik am just tied of him yes he is a good player but with the injuries and the headaches just be better off without him.last for people that think the wild will be some other state are just dumb cause one minnesota will never let that happen again. am excited about the new changes and can't wait to see what happens....nuff said

this was a great move. CL is proving a good owner. he saw the fans fuming and leaving in droves. season ticket holders threatening to leave cause of the way the Wild were going, and he did what was necessary. my only complaint wth CL so far is that he didn't kick DR & JL to the curb a yr earlier. and those ppl that complain about when he was in Nashville, well i feel sorry for any owner of a team in the south. it's a no win environment. no true fan base and fans that know nothing about hockey and really don't care. other than northern transplants and a few newcomers it's just ppl who r looking for something to do on game nights. up north and here in MN, hockey is a passion and a way of life. there is a waiting list to get season tickets by passionate fans. and the reason the Wild were calling ticket holders was to try and convince them to stay with the team and give the new direction a chance, cause they were losing ticket holders because of the way the team had been. the next 2 yr is gonna be growing and rebuilding, but they should still be competative. then look out, the Wild will be a force to reckon with. getting rid of DR was the best move the Wild have made in yrs. he destroyed this team. letting the best players go, while constantly keeping average players and over paying for them, leaving no cap room for good players. and even though JL "was" a great coach at one time, he lost his edge and the game was passing him by. he left cause he knew he was gonna be fired, so he left before hand to keep his dignity.

Why are Red Wings fans crybabies with no hockey knowledge? Aw, is it because we are in the Stanley Cup playoffs again? You don't have to bash us because we are good. No one can stay on top forever.

I wanna know how CP ran the Preds into the ground??? They were nothing and now they are a team on the brink of making the playoffs? Is that not progress.. especially for a team that has a very small fan base. You guys just wanna b!tch and complain just to b!tch and complain. Look at Risbroughs actions.. how many free agents have we lost in the last 5 years.. Since Mikko how many rookies that he drafted become star or semi-star players? A.J. Thelen, Benoit Pouliot, James Sheppard? All of these players should be the center up coming future for our team..

Lee & David J, Sorry but you guys are both flat out wrong. I don't know where you get your hockey knowledge from, but my god, talk about being uninformed..

Seriously, who did you want as GM!? How many qualified GM's do you think are out there? CL did a great thing by bringing in Fletcher! Short of trying to get Jim Nill from the Red Wings, who openly stated he didn't want to leave Michigan because he has kids in school and doesn't want to uproot his family. Fletcher was by far the most qualified choice to usher in a new era of hockey into Minnesota.

You should be counting your lucky stars that CL had enough forsight to bring in a guy thats young, qualified, talented and most importantly knows what makes an exciting hockey team. I don't know if you listened to his press conference but his plans are phenomenal. What more could you ask for!? The Wild brought in a guy that has the right idea on how to handle every situation. Scouting & drafting, creating an explosive offense without jeopardizing our defense, he even had a great reply about Gabby. H has a great plan & he will make the Wild a strong, strong team, and more importantly, an exciting team to watch. Maybe you guys loved watching low scoring games, and watching the Wild play a dump & chase style game that didn't work against teams in the play-offs. Maybe you loved DR's "hope for the best" approach with signing contracts & drafting decisions. Maybe you're impressed with the lackluster farm system DR created and the fact that we have one of the weakest lists of prospects in the NHL. Hell maybe you guys even loved hearing from DR that we had too high of expectations as fans instead of him apologizing for for all his mistakes he made. Well I expect Minnesota to be a consistent powerhouse in the NHL for years to come & thats the kind of GM that we have now.

If you can't see that the Wild were in a downward tailspin you have blinders on. Be thankful that we have an owner that gave ful control & a wide open check book to a brilliant hockey mind who has great intentions for our team. It may take 1 to 3 years to get where we need to be, but mark my words, CL made a great decision in choosing Fletcher, and you will see some great moves out of the WIld in the near future.

How many moron hockey owners does it take to change a light bulb? None; I don’t envision light at the end of the WILDS tunnel. Mr Leipold Perhaps you should of bought a hotdog stand instead. Please hold the mustard!!!

GM Retreads, washouts and never weres is what Leipold is interviewing. So what kind of coach do you think we’ll get?

Watch the Team of 18,568 dwindle to less than a sell-out next season. Those fans in the Warming House (waiting list) will take a pass or decline the opportunity to buy season tickets.

A call from the WILD in the last two days to those of us remaining ticket holders indicates a true panic is blooming at the X.

The twin Cities has already gone down this route with the wedding initiation printing genius from Mankato and his hapless Timberwolves organization. The parallels with the WILD are strikingly similar.

Be prepared to hear about the WILD moving to Milwaukee in the next few years as Leipold screws this team into the ground more so than he did the Nashville Predators. If his partner the hedge fund crook is watching, take the team over now. At least we’d see some great ponzi hockey … ha!
