Red Wings Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

Jakub Kindl(notes) is one of the Red Wings’ top prospects and will be playing regularly on their defense next season and, if all goes according to plan, for many years to come.

But he’s still learning, and he still needs some seasoning in the minors. That was apparent Thursday, when Kindl was recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL) and made his NHL debut, replacing Brian Rafalski(notes), who is day-to-day with a sore back.

Kindl played 14:18, finishing with no points and a minus-2 rating. His turnover led to Edmonton’s second goal in its 4-1 win over the Wings.

The Wings, however, believe Kindl has made good progress in Grand Rapids. He accompanied the team on its trip to New Jersey for Saturday’s game, but will only play if either Rafalski or Jonathan Ericsson(notes), who hurt his knee on Thursday, can’t dress.

“We believe he’s an NHL defenseman, but there’s growing pains, that’s just the nature of the NHL,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “The people that step into this league and don’t miss a beat at the age of 21 or 22 are probably going to be stars and Hall-of-Famers. Everybody else has growing pains.”

Kindl, 22, has good size (6-3) and moves the puck well. But he needs to play with more consistency and shore up his defensive game.

Oilers 4, Red Wings 1:   The Wings were sluggish at the start, got more sloppy as the game progressed and lost in familiar fashion by committing too many turnovers and failing to generate enough offense.

The Oilers led 2-1 after one period and put the game away with a pair of goals from Patrick O’Sullivan(notes) just 2:57 apart in the second period.

The Wings failed to take advantage of a struggling team and a mediocre backup goaltender (Jeff Deslauriers). Coach Mike Babcock was disappointed in his team’s effort and execution, calling it his club’s worst game since a 6-2 loss in Buffalo on Oct. 13.

NOTES, QUOTES

• General manager Ken Holland said the club believes D Jonathan Ericsson, who hurt his left knee, is fine and will be able to play Saturday in New Jersey. Ericsson was injured while battling for the puck with Edmonton’s Dustin Penner(notes) behind the Wings’ net with 6:30 remaining in the third period. He appeared to catch a rut in the ice, twisting his left leg.

• Wings coach Mike Babcock switched left wings Ville Leino(notes) and Todd Bertuzzi(notes) on his top two lines. He put Leino on a line with Pavel Datsyuk(notes) and Tomas Holmstrom(notes), hoping to spark Datsyuk, who has just six goals and 20 points in 25 games.

Quote To Note:   “We need to win games and get back into the playoff picture. This is a team we should have came out with a better effort against and we didn’t, so it’s pretty disappointing.”—Wings D Brad Stuart(notes).

ROSTER REPORT

Goaltenders:   Jimmy Howard(notes), Chris Osgood(notes).

Defensemen:   Nicklas Lidstrom(notes), Brad Stuart, Jonathan Ericsson, Brett Lebda(notes), Derek Meech(notes), Jakub Kindl.

First Line:   Ville Leino, Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Holmstrom.

Second Line:   Todd Bertuzzi, Henrik Zetterberg(notes), Dan Cleary.

Third Line:   Kris Draper(notes), Darren Helm(notes), Drew Miller(notes).

Fourth Line:   Brad May(notes), Justin Abdelkader(notes), Kirk Maltby(notes).

Player Notes:

• G Jimmy Howard, making his third consecutive start in net, was victimized by a couple of bad breaks as Edmonton’s first and third goals were deflected in off the stick of a Wings player. But Howard also wasn’t as sharp as he had been the last several weeks.

• LW Ville Leino’s season-long struggles continue. He hasn’t scored a goal in his last 11 games and has only three goals and five points in 26 games. The rookie hasn’t been as strong on the puck as the team expected, losing too many 1-on-1 battles.

• RW Drew Miller has played in all 11 games since being acquired on waivers from Tampa Bay. He is skating well, has been responsible defensively and is a reliable penalty-killer.

Medical Watch:

• D Brian Rafalski missed Thursday’s game due to stiffness in his back. He is listed as day-to-day.

• RW Patrick Eaves(notes) has missed two games with a sore left ankle and is listed as day-to-day. He skated over a rut in the ice during the morning skate on Monday.

• D Niklas Kronwall(notes) is out until mid-January with a sprained left medial collateral ligament suffered Nov. 21.

• RW Jason Williams(notes) is out until mid-January with a fractured right fibula sustained on Nov. 7.

• C Valtteri Filppula(notes) is out until late December with a broken right wrist sustained on Oct. 29.

• D Andreas Lilja(notes) is on long-term injured reserve due to concussion-like symptoms. He has been skating but remains out indefinitely.

• LW Johan Franzen(notes) isn’t expected to return until March due to a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, sustained Oct. 8.

Osgood is a great goalie. He is, by far, one of my favorite NHL players of all time. Ozzie has had a great run since being drafted in 1991. After 18 years of NHL hockey he possesses a save percentage on .897.

On the other hand, Jimmy Howard is a little younger, a little more in experienced, but he has a better save percentage of .907. Obviously, the numbers give the Wings a better overall chance to get to the playoffs.

Like I said, Ozzie is one of my favorite players. Tim Cheveldae was another favorite player of mine. The Redwing organization has a habit of pulling goalies before they get slow. Ozzie replaced Chevy and it was a good idea.

I think the Wings made the right decision. I like Ozzie, but Howard has slightly better numbers.

Do any of the people who don't like Jimmy Howard actually watch him play or are you just looking at the box scores? Almost every goal he gives up is either on the power play or on a deflection. He looks better than a lot of other goalies I've seen this year. If the rest of the team had the commitment to defense that they had 2 years ago, everyone would be raving about him.
Behind the back pass Bertuzzi on the other hand.....how far has this guy fallen? He may as well have sucker punched himself out of the league because he hasn't been the same player.

With Franzen and Kronwall out with injuries, there is little reason to wonder why the power play is not good. When the team gets healthy it will be better. I would agree that they are not finishing plays. To me it looks like their timing is off on passing plays close to the net. This again could be the product of too many key injuries and alot of line combination changes.

i agree with most you on jimmy howard, my only quarrel is with babcock (good ol' saskatchewan boy) he didnt play howard enough last year when they were killing it, to up his confidence. as much as i despise that son of a ***** hudler and his defensive 'struggles' he was and has been the most efficient player in the nhl for the last 2 seasons with ~50 pts and less than 12 min/gm. like it or not, thats bordering forsberg efficiency now imagine a full season with either zetts or pavel feeding him gold? imagine the pp? that son of a ***** i hate him, but i digress, we all cant freak out about the way this years turning out, franzen and filpulla were supposed to be big parts but they've gone down to injury. as for the "losses" in the offseason
    1) hossa - we won the cup without him so who cares? he always was just the cherry on the top
    2) samuelsson - decent trigger man but it was his time to go and plus detroits picked up another project, see patrick eaves former 1st round. he reaks of danny cleary potential.
    3) kopecky - healthy scratch
    4) hudler - not going to lie i think this one hurted the most out of them all. i hate that guy!

this wings team is gonna be great you just wait/ haters.

ozzy is a playoff goalie not a season one.

howard is getting better game by game he looks like he is still lacking a bit of confidence / but let him get this season under his belt and he is gonna be awesome.

I would rather have Howard's upswing than Osgood's obvious downswing at this point in their respective careers.

Jimmy is coming around now that he has a few games under his belt, he just needed the confidence of winning a few, 4 & 3 now. I've seen him in GR where he had a stellar season, got hurt, struggled to get the groove back, and then had some good years. Ozzie is looking like he did at playoff time which will give the newcomers time to gel and lower the blood pressure of the fans and coaches.

Wings haven't gone for youth? 7 @ 25 or under and 12 @ 30 or under out of 22, looks like a good mix to me. Far younger than some teams of the past and a good pipeline here in GR.

Bruisetuzzi and May were brought in to add that muscle we lack and make opponents think twice about taking liberties with Paves & Hank, willingness to go to the corner and stand in front of the net, definitely not for their offensive skills although Bert's hands make wake up again.

I wasn't sad to see Hudler go, too inconsistent, coughed the puck up at key times, and didn't cover his D when they pinched. Hossa doesn't seem to be a clutch player, didn't do it for us or the Pens so he was way too expensive for the results. I was sorry to see Samuelsson go, he added that combination of grit and scoring we needed.

P.S. Franzen is still a Wing.

Great to see more Jimmy Howard supporters on here lately. I can't stand fans that hate on the players on thier own team. The kid has shined at every level of play in his career and is starting to make that transition in the NHL. I said it at the beginning of the season, you have to be patient with young goaltenders. It's very rare to get those Marc Andre Fluery types that can dominate right away. He's still going to have some bad games but he's improving in leaps and bounds and gaining confidence. It doesn't look like any big roster changes are in the plans for this year so until something does happen let's support the guys we have. Go Wings!

    Yo, Glass Beaters,
you remind me of coyotes who speak from the pack, attack the sick, lame, and aged, and leave their wandering tracks behind them. You wouldn't know a great franchise if it kissed you. Go on back to your seat and try not to spill your beer all over yourself. Enjoy the game for what it is and don't become a fair weather fan of the players who wear the Winged Wheel.

LETS GO RED WINGS !! !!!

Gomoyo nails it. The reason the Wings stay near the top year after year is due to Holland/Nill/Devallano's ability to stock Grand Rapids and make key F/A role player acquisitions like Eaves. Remember the bust and meltdown with Curtis Joseph when Hasek wanted to return? The club learned a hard lesson from that episode and hasn't made any moves like that since. I can think of at least 2 veterans beyond Hasek who signed with the Wings to win a Cup and promptly retired: Dallas Drake and Steve Duschene.

With all these long term injuries and cap space to match the goalie woes, I'm left wondering why the Wings don't try and pick up a backup goalie by the name of Jean-Sebastien Giguere... Yes he has a lofty contract a 6 mil. Yes, he is coming off of the worse season of his career amidst the loss of his father. But look at what he has done: Conn Smythe winner, 2 time Stanley Cup Final starting Goalkeeper, 2007 Stanley Cup ring. Meanwhile, Anaheim would benefit from clearing cap space and grabbing some prospects and/or getting a few role players... but maybe its just a silly dream.

For those of you who think Forsberg would be a good addition to the Wing's Roster; . . . . . Mr. Forsberg has already made the statement that he "would rather NOT PLAY for Detroit". He apparent-ly holds some "grudge" against Detroit from the '90's, although he did'nt elaborate on any reason for this "attitude".

for god's sake, enough with the shanahan talk. for everyone who's still stuck in 2001, here are a couple stats:

-shanny scored 29 goals in 67 games with the rangers in '07..
-shanny scored 29 goals in 107 combined games with the rangers/devils in '08/'09
-the wings are the oldest team in the nhl
-if shanny wore a wings jersey again, he would turn 41.

hell, if we're feeling nostalgic enough to start shouting for this kind of nonsense, why don't we bring back chelios? recall darren mccarty? i'm sure we could make a move for fedorov or call mike vernon out of retirement?

point is, we (wings fans) need to stop living in the glory days and own up to the fact that we haven't made any strides to get younger for quite some time... and it's finally caught up with us. now we're trying to get younger. if you're not finding good enough talent in your farm system, then there's only one thing to do - cut your losses and make cap room.

yes, we've made some questionable (at-best) personnel decisions. obviously, bertuzzi turned out to be the veteran scoring muscle we were looking for. letting kyle quincey go in favor of derek meech has been gold. the simple fact that brett "forward trapped in a defenseman's body but still hasn't realized it yet" lebda and andreas "what sport am i playing?" lilja are still wearing redwing jerseys is beyond my comprehension.

hossa, samuelsson, hudler, franzen - NONE of these were bad moves whatsoever. sure, i would have liked to see hossa stay a wing, but not for $63 million over 12 years. it's unfortunate he got dumped after flopping in the playoffs after such a phenomenal regular season, but tough @#$%. we got him to win the stanley cup, not the president's cup. it didn't work, he was a big reason for that, so now he's out. samuelsson had no place on our roster. he was too good for our third line and he knew it. so he went out there, sat in the slot, and shot whenever he touched the puck. he never dumped and he didn't play defense, and that's not wings hockey. hudler was basically the same deal. he would overachieve and then underachieve and had been doing much more underachieving than overachieving as of late. he was a good third line center, but too inconsistent. no one gets pushed off the puck as much as hudler, except for filppula, but filppula is twice the player.

they'll have cap room to make a big splash in the offseason (if they don't do something outrageous at the trade deadline) so we just need to grin and bear it. maybe patrick kane? who knows. either way, wings fans need to brighten up. shanahan will do us no good, not in the short term or the long term. whining about hossa is neither here nor there. the things that's killing us are injuries, and because we've made no moves to get younger, those injuries are amplified ten-fold. yes, it's only october, but don't be ridiculous - dreams of a third consecutive year in the finals and a 12th cup are long gone. i'm not a downer, i'm just being realistic.

with that said, i look forward to braving the storm and going back to our winning ways. i'll stay patient... as long as management gives me a reason to.

I agree about Forsberg, evn though I hate the idea that anyone from 90's colorado squad would be playing in Detroit. If he is available, Wings should approach him. But it is Forsberg, exactly - it's Forsberg. Oh, I can't decide.
