Penguins C Malkin named NHL Rookie of the Month

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Evgeni Malkin did not make his NHL debut until October 18, but the Russian sensation still managed to capture the first Rookie of the Month award for the 2006-07 season.

The second overall pick in the 2004 draft, Malkin suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason that cost him the first five games of the campaign. But since he entered the Pittsburgh Penguins’ lineup, the 20-year-old has scored in his first six games, becoming the first player in 89 years to do so.

In October, Malkin became the first player in 14 years to tally in each of his first five contests. He had five goals and four assists in the month, helping the Penguins win four of their five games.

Malkin also began November in outstanding fashion Wednesday, scoring a pair of goals - including the overtime game-winner - in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 triumph against Los Angeles.

Other candidates included Kings center Anze Kopitar, San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Carle and Colorado Avalanche center Peter Stastny.
