Thornton, Cheechoo, Kiprusoff named NHL Players of Week

NEW YORK (TICKER) San Jose Sharks teammates Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo on Monday were named co-winners of the NHL’s Offensive Player of the Week award.

Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Sharks center Thornton and right wing Cheechoo accounted for 16 of the team’s 19 goals last week.

Thornton, who leads the league with 125 points, had 11 assists and one goal last week, while Cheechoo had seven tallies and four assists. Cheechoo leads the league with 56 goals.

Also considered for the offensive award were centers Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Joe Nieuwendyk of the Florida Panthers.

Kiprusoff posted a 0.32 goals-against average and .988 save percentage with two shutouts en route to going 2-0-1 last week. He earned his third weekly honor of the season.

Others in the running for the defensive honor were netminders Curtis Joseph of the Phoenix Coyotes, Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres and Chris Mason of the Nashville Predators.
