Sabres F Mair clears waivers, to stay in Buffalo

  • Print

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)—Veteran Sabres forward Adam Mair(notes) has cleared waivers and will be staying in Buffalo.

Coach Lindy Ruff said Tuesday he’s electing to keep Mair in Buffalo as an extra forward rather than send him to Portland, Maine, the Sabres’ American Hockey League affiliate. NHL teams had until noon Tuesday to claim Mair.

A nine-year NHL veteran, Mair has proven to be the odd-man out on a team stocked with forwards.

Mair missed the start of the season after having hip surgery. He’s appeared in only three games and registered no points this season.

The Sabres (9-4-1), on their first two-game losing streak of the season, host Edmonton on Wednesday.

'{Kaleta, Grier, Ellis, Rivet}' GREAT!!! now how about Roy Pominville Vanek and Stafford??? The guys we're paying money and still refuse to bang around in the coners! Buffalo will spot another huge let down this year. I cannot tell you how disgusted I was with the loss to Boston. It's one thing to get beat, but another to completely give up and show zero fight. Sure Millers great, but he should have gone to Detroit, I feel bad for him. I watched the boston loss and saw roy and pominvill among others look scared to mix things up with the bruins in the corners... not a good sign for a professional hockey team

    To G Ball #12:

"If half the guys played with as much hustle and determination as Adam Mair, maybe the Sabres could actually win a Cup or two."

Funny -- I can think of several who already are {Kaleta, Grier, Ellis, Rivet} -- and they, unlike Mair, can actually contribute offensively . . .

@Bill_Cody I couldn't have said it better myself. If half the guys played with as much hustle and determination as Adam Mair, maybe the Sabres could actually win a Cup or two.

Actually - how many guys do the sabres or bills cut that do pan out? if they're good at anything, it's figuring out when a guy is out of gas. Exceptions being guys they cannot afford like campbell or nate clemens

hip surgeries are tough on a lot of hockey players, especially with the timing in this case.

from Steve " this will come back to haunt us" you've got to be kidding. I liked Mair, but it's not too hard to find guys that hustle, play 8 minutes a game and score 5 goals a year. Not to worried about this haunting us.

Mair will be missed if he ends up somewhere else. While he wasn't the most skilled player, he plays hard every shift. I would often use him as an example to my kids that no matter what level of player you are, hustle and ambition are important. If some of our "Skill" players had half of Adam's heart, we'd be a different team.

Something tells me losing him will come back to haunt us, but you get thinking that way in Buffalo.

Mair's the s**t. Not exactly a goal scoring machine, but take a look at this man finish his checks and take people out of the play. Need a guy like that on every line, especially in BUF. Don't knock the Mair. He'll be expendable in after this year when his contract's up...then you can.

If only the rest of the team had half as much 'grit' as he does, they would have got those 3 other points somewhere and at least made the playoffs.

"Building From Within," is the new Buffalo News headline...no s**t guys...for the last 10-years you've been building within...

Nobody like training camp, besides I'm sure his doctor told him to "rehab the hip" over the summer and see how it feels. Of course there's still a problem, so under the knife we go and NO trainig camp. How convenient. Every year it's somebody different.

Maybe Mair played golf with Bruce Smith this summer. Bruce was the master of finding ways to miss training camp. Only difference is that Bruce was good enough that nobody could step in and take his place. One thing's for certain..... Adam Mair is no Bruce Smith. With 18 guys fighting for 13 roster spots, this could blow up in Mair's face.

Maybe having the surgery earlier in the summer would interfere with his golf game, or could it be he hurt the hip playing golf? I'm with Dubes on this one.

why do these pro athletes have surgery just before the season is about to start
if he needed surgery why not have it right after the season and have the entire summer to mend no thats too logical maybe Vanek will decide to have tonsils taken out in october
