NHL suspends Flyers Briere for 2 games

  • Print

TORONTO (AP)—The NHL has suspended Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere two games for a late hit on Colorado Avalanche defenseman Scott Hannan(notes).

The league announced the discipline Tuesday.

The incident occurred at 9:06 of the second period Monday night, right after Hannan had scored.

Briere will miss games Wednesday against the New York Islanders and Friday at Buffalo. He will be eligible to return Saturday at Atlanta.

He will forfeit $67,358 in pay, with the money going to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Briere says he respects the decision and will try to move on once he’s back.

Yes idiots, the league should suspend other guys because Briere is small....get over it. Briere was involved in a very dirty play that injured another player.....personally instead of whining like every other Flyer fan on here, you should count yourselves lucky that he didn't get more....especially since he's actually having a decent year.

briere weighs like 99 lbs. i'm sure he could hurt someone with his stick, or an elbow.
but i wish the league would look at all the times he's squashed, and many of it extremely late.
tit for tat, every time the flyers play someone, someone from the opposing team should get suspended for late hitting briere or the little defenseman.
    the leage really amazes me.
    it happens every stinking game.

penguins fans need to realize that the only reason they have crosby, malkin and stall is that they were dead last for so many years. it takes a real sh1tty team to get that many 1st over all picks! so I poop on you all! by the way, crosby is the biggest cry baby I've ever seen in pro sports. He makes T.O. look like a man!

    hey brian,
first of all its spelled sidney maybe if they had better schools in philly you would have known that. Second of all the penguins were bad for more than one year but that i still watched every game and cheered them on. The flyers were bad for one year, if it was any longer your fans would have left too. So as far as jumping on the bandwagon you better rethink it. But you do have one thing you can be proud of...the flyers are by far the cheapest team in the league and continue to prove it. CONGRATS joker.

Excellent post Brian. I've brought those exact facts up before and have yet to hear a reasonable argument from a Pittsburgh sports fan. All they can counter with are attacks on our character.

Another point that hasn't been broughten up, for what reason I don't know, is that Penguins fans are bandwagon fans and are disloyal. The Penguins attendance records were so poor after their glory years of the early nineties that Lemiuex nearly had to relocate the team because it was doing so poorly. Now, all the sudden, every Pittsburgh resident is a Pens fan. Well where were you when the team was so close to foreclosure? Oh, I get it, you didn't want to support a franchise that bad. I mean who would? So now that the Penguins are winners again it's just so damn easy to love them again. Oh Cidny!
Also, the year the Flyers finished dead last in the NHL, only like two, three or four years ago, their attendance was still in the top five throughout the league. What does this all mean? Well Pittsburgh fans, from an ethic standpoint, should feel like they are violating some kind of morals or ethics anytime they claim Philadelphians are bandwagons. The facts speak for themselves. And one more thing, why is it that the Pirates continually post among the leagues worst attendance records YEAR AFTER YEAR. Maybe it has something to do with them being an awful franchise? Yeah I'd say there's a definite positive correlation there. The worse they get the worse the attendance gets. Let's hop off this teams bus and onto the first winner's we can find! In a nutshell, that's the city of Sh1ttsburgh.

Frontrunner33- So why do you feel it necessary to come on here and bash Philly? This post is about Daniel Briere and has nothing to do with any of those teams. For such a good-hearted boy with a dream of owning a pet penguin, that comes across as a tad bitter, no?

Isn't there a post of Sidney Crosby holding the Olympic Torch somewhere where you and all the Penguin "faithful" can start a rousing discussion about how good you are and how you've always been supporters?

The Legend - Calm down dude, i was 10. That's right 10 years old, which is the same mentality that you possess at whatever age you are now, so give me a break. I gave you my reasons for liking the teams. The fact is that i've stuck by those teams, all of which, besides the penguins, have done absolutely nothing since. Yet, i'm still cheering for them every time they play. So yeah, call me a front runner for liking the last place indians, last in the big ten michigan, the 5 or 6 straight losing seasons 49ers.

So it was 15 years ago that would be 1994, correct?

49ers - Won the Super Bowl in 94
    Penguins - Won the Cup in 91 & 92
Suns - NBA Finals in 93, lost to the Bulls
Indians - World Series in 95, lost to the Braves.

Two words my man- FRONT RUNNER.

The Legend...close, but no, there was less than 300 students total in my grade school (k-8) when i was 10, so i def wasn't getting picked on...my teams would be hockey-penguins (i've always wanted a pet penguin so this was the closest thing), football-49ers (steve young and jerry rice, and john taylor, the forgotten 49ers receiver, is a friend of my family), baseball-indians (the movie Major League), basketball-suns (charles barkley), college-my alma mater michigan..now before you go calling out why i chose the teams, keep in mind, i was 10 and i've stuck by each team, win or lose for the past 15 years...

I've said it on here before, I flat out refuse to listen to Pens fans (even the ones from Delaware) who question other teams' loyalty. Pittsburgh basically lost their franchise until Lemiuex bailed them out. Where were you then? Your bandwagon's crowded nowadays, but Pittsburgh's true colors come out when they're bad.

Pens33 - pray tell what are those other teams that you "objectively" picked. Sounds like a certain Delaware 10-year old got a few too many wedgies at recess from other kids wearing Eagles jerseys, and now he's getting back at them on the Yahoo message boards. Face it dude, you might not like the same teams as Philly fans, but you're one of them, in both arrogance and outspokedness. Loser.

The flyers are DEFINATLY the dirtiest team in the league. Richards' hit on booth wasnt that dirty but when you have guys like pronger, carcillo, and hartnell on your team then yeah you are the dirtiest team in the league. None of those guys would make in in organizations like detroit or nj because they teach discipline and those guys, even though they have not yet gotten in trouble, have no discipline at all. I agree with you pens33 philly fans are pathetic, GO DEVILS!

NHL on the fly showed this from a great angle last night. It was a cheap hit because he left his fit and got his stick up. (He had too in order to hit Hannan above the shoulders with how short he is) Briere could have easily bumped his shoulder into Hannan's chest instead went dirtier. Well deserved 2 games if not more.

FlyGuy - I agree, look what that goon Laraque did to Kronwall last week... as far as Malkin goes, I'm not sure he's as dirty as he is a pu&&y, taking a swing at an unsuspecting player, then hiding behind the ref.

#60...I'm not from Pittsburgh, but i believe the term "city of champions" was coined by the Steelers. Again, i may be wrong. I'm actually from Delaware, and I know you're saying that i should be a Philly fan since we're so close in proximity. But i absolutely LOATHE Philadelphia, it's sports teams, and especially it's fans. For example, i was logical enough at age 10 to realize that Philly fans are nothing more than bandwagon fans. They don't support their teams, they only support winning. So, at age 10, after realzing the putridness of Philly fans, i decided to pick my own teams, and it's a completely wide range of teams for a completely wide range of reasons. 15 years later, my thoughts as a 10 year old still hold true. Philly fans are a joke. Always have been, always will be...

p.s. just a little fact to back up my statements: over 1 million people showed up for the Phillies world series parade, about 200 people showed up to greet the team this year after they lost in the world series...can you explain that one???
