Ducks D Wisniewski suspended for hit on Doan

  • Print

TORONTO (AP)—Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski(notes) was suspended for two games because he hit Phoenix’s Shane Doan(notes) in the forehead with his arm.

The NHL announced the suspension Monday, two days after Wisniewski delivered the blow to Doan’s head in the first period of the Coyotes’ 3-2 shootout win Saturday night.

Wisniewski, who didn’t receive a penalty on the play, will also lose more than $28,000 in pay for sitting out Tuesday night against Pittsburgh and Thursday night against Nashville.

You're an idiot if you think that that hit was clean. Good on Doan for staying in the game and fighting him later on.

    Just watching Ducks-Pinguins!

Those Bettman's henchmen moron judges are working against Ducks again.

Can anyone kick Bettman down there if he has anything between his legs, which I doubt?

    Hey Turkpbr,
Getting a little@#$%y, now that your typical bottom dwellers are off to a good start, huh? Now you think you're Mr. Hockey, and your team are a bunch of hotshots? Honestly, are you judging the season by what has happened, thus far? Do you honestly think your team--which will probably be in another state, if not another country, next year--are Cup contenders? Once Anaheim finds its game, trust me, they will be climbing back up the standings, pulling down the Coyotes, and the Kings.

Enjoy your teams success, while it lasts, even if it is at the expense,at the moment, of the Ducks. Trust me, the season won't end this way.

So that the people may know about suspensions being made after the game and whether or not a penalty was called or not comes from the WAR Room in Toronto. Every game is reviewed, every hit is reviewed and when they see something in the game they will look at it from every camera angle they have available on it. Once thet believe that a hit or what ever it is they are seeing they will forard it up the chain of command and being reviewed by others all the way up to Colin Campbell who then will hand down any suspension for the incident. So, the Ref's never called a penalty so, why should they get suspended? Maybe the Ref's did not see it whether they were looking that way or were looking down ice following the puck who knows. But, a guy takes a cheap shot after looking at the Ref's to see if they are watching or not and then takes it, it wrong and hockey does not need them types of players. Otherwise, it will come down to being old time hockey where they send in the goons to take care of people like that. Of course, maybe they should have some goons doing that now as the disrespect for players is growing immensely. Make the players who take cheap shots at other players know that they will be targeted if they do that stuff and I believe alot of these cheap shots will stop all together in hockey.....

Alex - Bettman does NOT hand out suspensions as you may think, the person you want to make comments about is Colin Campbell who hands down the suspensions like he did to WIZ. It really amazes me of all these people who make comments about hockey and have NO CLUE about what they are talking about. Simply amazing..

I think Paul T hit the nail on the head with point B.

The fact that IF Doan was seriously hurt in that play could have resulted in poor play on the ice from the Coyotes which in turn results in worse attendance then the 5000 who showed up last night thus affecting the sale of the Coyotes to any interested buyers is a conflict of interest. Whether or not this thought did even enter Colin Campbell's mind doesn't matter. It's a conflict of interest and thus a third party should have been decided upon to decide if it warranted a suspension.

How can anyone disagree with this suspension?? Not looking at any other suspension or non-suspension... this is a classic case of elbow/forearm to the head. It was not a hit at all like the others. I wouldn't even call this a hit. It was a pure elbow/forearm, nothing less........"

Okay....Let's look at your myopic viewpoint. If this a "classic case of elbow/forearm to the head" why didn't 2 of the best refs in the league call a penalty? Doan only missed one shift....so injury wasn't the issue. Do you know what the penalty for an elbow to the head is? IT'S A 2 MINUTE MINOR!! How can anyone disagree you ask? Many do....including the ex director of officiating, Stephen Walkom, who was one of the refs that night.
And you might find it interesting that Doan himself is shocked that Wiz got suspended. He considered the case closed after they faught in the second.

He leaned in with his forearm. that was a dirty hit and everyone knows it. suspended for two games is a good call. what i dont get it was the refs didnt eject wiz for intent to injure or a major for roughing.... "

Everybody knows it??? So you ...and everybody knows more than the refs on the ice? That's what's sooo suspicious and unsettling about this suspension is ....

A: Stephen Walkom was one of the refs. He was the director of officiating as recently as last season. That's the TOP REF. He saw nothing wrong with the hit....didn't even issue a 2 minute minor. He, if anyone, would know what constitutes a penalty.

B: The suspension was handed down 40 minutes AFTER the nhl closed the deal on the strong-arm buyout of the Coyotes. They have allreay made comments about looking to sell it to a local group that would keep it in Phoenix. If the merchandise is damaged....no one will buy it. And the best way to make sure no one damages the merchandise, is to levy sanctions on anyone who bumps it too hard.

C:Doan skated into the offensive zone with HIS HEAD DOWN. He was looking at the puck. Wiz was skating backwards, in front of him, noticed his head down , stopped, braced himself, and delivered a legal check into Doan's chest. Wiz never left his feet....and didn't line Doan up. Doan skated into Wiz.

So why the suspension? That's where "everyone" who doesn't hold your...."wahhh...our captain got hit " view is perplexed.

It was not a hit at all like the others. I wouldn't even call this a hit. It was a pure elbow/forearm, nothing less. On that play, all he has to do is hit Doan in the chest, and it is a fine play. It was a dirty hit and one of the easiest decisions on a suspension this year. Whether he intended to do it or not, it was wreckless. Yeah... it must be the Bettman/Penguins conspiracy because we all know that the Ducks are unbeatable with Wisniewski in the lineup and without him, all is lost. Get real people.

What the league needs to do is outlaw hits to the head. This is happening way too much. The funny thing about these hits is that they are not being penalized, but the player winds up being suspended for not breaking a rule. Stupid stupid stupid!

Props to Doan for staying in the game and handling business the way it should be.

Here we go, the NHL is on it's path to eliminate fighting. This is the first step, cracking down on clean hits, fining players for clean hits, next a clean body check will warrant a a suspension. It's getting bad and we are just 2 steps from watching figure skaters with blow up hockey sticks.
Bettman and his band of idiots need to be eliminated.

Amazing on the Duck suspension. Its simple. Bettman in bed with Versus. Versus owned by Comcast, which owns Flyers. Therefore Flyers players get away with murder. If you look at Versus/Bettman schedule for 3 years, Flyers are on as much or more than Pitt or Wash. As a matter of fact you will also see only about 5% of Canadian teams on Versus ever. Its the Bettman/Comcast USA Hockey league.

For those of you who weren't at the game, (I was) you should know that it was a cheap shot. However, Shane didn't whine and complain like a lot of players, he bided his time then eventually caught up to Wiswhatever and thumped him a few times. For the moron here that suggested next time they play Wiswhatever should finish the job, go ahead and try. Shane would make mince meat of the weasel, hes one of the strongest players in the league!

Almost as laughable as Boll getting a game misconduct for hitting Alex Ovie, only got it because of who he hit, and it wasn't even more than a pushing match. We need unbaised calls, this crap is almost out of hand. Lot of teams getting burned by this crap.

I think he really spreads the word against Ducks to his idiotic judges.
Why nobody was suspended for Marchant being leveled into the boards with an elbow when he snapped his head?

NHL is becoming not fun place to watch, it's for sure!
Ducks need to fire their GM and Whitney too!

I think the league should up it to 20 game suspension or go back to the the basics hurt the other players crush em into the boards get them off their game play I think the League in genral should let the goalies play the puck not keep them in that triangle that is so dumb i kinda want to see the goalies go at it on the ice.

Hard, and what I think is 'just about on the legal side of the line' hit. I think the suspension, however, is ridiculous because so far in the season, there have been many 'dirtier' hits with not as drastic consequences. For example, Mike Richards. I'm not saying it was a dirty hit because I don't think it was. I think it was just another good hard hit- no elbow, no nothing, Booth's head was clearly down. But what does Richards get? A fine. Okay, Gary. Okay.

Isn't it a conflict of interest for the NHL to decide to suspend a player for an incident that happened against a team that they own?
