Ovechkin: Extended absence report was a joke

  • Print

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP)—Alex Ovechkin(notes) says he was joking when he told a reporter over the weekend that he could be out more than a month.

The Washington Capitals star practiced lightly Monday and said he would actually miss about a week.

He hasn’t played since leaving a Nov. 1 game against Columbus after he was hurt in a scrum. The Capitals said last week that Ovechkin, whose 14 goals and 23 points lead the team, was week to week with what they called an upper-body problem.

Ovechkin, who was quoted by Yahoo! on Saturday night as saying he could miss four or five weeks, insisted his left shoulder was not affected by the still unspecified injury, animatedly flexing the joint and telling reporters with a smile, “The shoulder’s fine, see?”

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau ruled Ovechkin out for Wednesday’s home game against the New York Islanders, but held out hope that his superstar could be ready by the weekend. Washington hosts Minnesota on Friday and travels to New Jersey on Saturday.

“I know Alex’s determination is he wants to play,” Boudreau said. “I don’t think Wednesday’s an option, but I’m not counting anything out after that.”

Added general manager George McPhee: “We’ll see if he can play this weekend. There’s that hope, but we want to be smart about it. … He’s a guy you almost have to hold back. You don’t want any setbacks.”

Ovechkin, wearing a yellow, non-contact jersey, joined his teammates about 55 minutes into Monday morning’s practice.

He skated while the rest of the Capitals finished their workout, pausing briefly to autograph a jersey for a fan who opened a door in the practice rink and shoved it through, then took part in light shooting drills with assistant coach Bob Woods and teammate Eric Fehr(notes) once the rest of the team departed the ice.

Most of Ovechkin’s attempts were wrist shots, though he did wind up on a couple of soft slap shots from long range, once raising his arms in his familiar celebratory pose after finding the net on a drive.

“It was easy shots, no hard ones,” he said. “I don’t want to rush my body to make some real hard shots.”

Ovechkin reported none of the discomfort that forced him to cut short a Friday session in Sunrise, Fla.

“Now, it’s no pain. It’s progress, I think,” he said. “I’m happy about it.”

About an hour after practice ended, Ovechkin was back on the ice for a 15-minute skate with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish.

Also, Michael Nylander(notes), who has not played this season because Boudreau doesn’t think he fits into the team’s system, cleared waivers Monday. McPhee said the Capitals were weighing their options with the veteran center and hoped to have a resolution by Tuesday, when he plans to attend GM meetings in Toronto.

what the hell is this class everyone keeps speaking of? and what does it have to do with a player's skill? last i knew, a player's skill was based on his ability to play hockey, a game who's objective is to SCORE GOALS. you know, the team that scores more wins, not the team that plays gentlemanly. if you want gentlemanly and tame, watch golf. hockey is about roughing ppl up and putting the puck in the net, which ovechkin does about as well, if not better, as anybody

yeah, it serves to confuse you, a pens fan, and hopefully the penguins organization as well. do you really think the caps front office was like "whaaaaaaaat? he was just joking?" who do you think employs the doctors who were evaluating him? also, did anyone read that interview? HE SAID HE WAS JOKING IN THE INTERVIEW. this is copy and pasted from the interview:

    Q. You're in good mood. Are you getting better?

OVECHKIN: I am better. But I will miss 4-5 weeks.

    Are you serious?

I actually plan on starting practice on the ice next week.

usually, when someone answers a question about the seriousness of a comment with "actually, ...," it means that no, they were not serious. now lets look at what ovechkin "actually" said: "i plan on starting practice on the ice in the next week." that would indicate to me that ovechkin would be ready soon after that. i dont know much about rehabbing hockey injuries, but i dont think ive ever heard of a player participating in practice for 5 weeks after an injury before actually playing a game.

whats also funny is that they talked about this injury on around the horn today. as far as i know, the only report that ovechkin would miss 4-5 weeks came from ovechkin himself, and was then immediately debunked, again by ovechkin himself. how some of you people achieve the idiocy you display is beyond me

    (yaaaaaaannn)
Class and dignity class and dignity beep boop beep..etc

Remember when the Canadian hockey snobs used to complain that the Euro's were boring, robotic, and had no character.
Now they're realizing it's actually them (Canadians) that are boring, robotic, and have no character, and they can't stand it, so now they're trying to sell 'calm and reserved' -as class and dignity..
and exciting and dominating, as obnoxious and ego-centric.

    Too funny.

i think ovie is ten times more better than crosby. Ovechkin is not afraid to hit or be physical he would scare the crap out of me. One because ovie knows how to dangle and two if you did get the puck from him he would hit you on your ass. And crosby doesnt hit he is still good but he would only be better if he hit people like ovie and another thing ovie is not scared to try ant thing he does dangles like no one els can do pretty muckh he is more creative than crosby. crosby would be better if he hit and tryed more moves to get around forwards and deffenceman.

The Caps lost in Game 7 to Pitt. If Pitt had lost everyone would be saying what a great leader Ovie is and how Crosby cant get over the hump. Now what people are saying is the exact opposite, give me a break. Ovie is an amazing player and plays the game the way it should be played. Stop listening to Don Cherry, the game has come a long way. If you were to go back and look at how hockey was played back then you would not have watched it. It was a bunch of barbarians on the ice going after the talented players.
Plus Crosby is a robot in front of the cameras he should just print out what he is going to say, its always the same thing. At least Ovie has a personality in front of the camera! If he was Canadian different story, nobody would question anything he does.

@michaelc, if youre saying that crosby DOES have that class and dignity ovechkin doesnt have, why did he punch boris valabik in the back of the neck, and then the back of the nutsack, last year? why did he constantly complain to the refs in the beginning of his career about getting hit? everyone talks about how ovechkin strays too far from the way the game is supposed to be played, but look how many old players are praising him for doing just the opposite? just stop hating

this is not me chiming in on the ov vs crosby vs malkin debate (anyone who's seem one of my previous postings knows how i feel about that). all i have to say is for those of you who are tired of reading about ov, STOP READING ARTICLES WITH HIS NAME IN THE TITLE, simple as that. And those of you who keep criticizing every Puck Daddy article, just stop reading it, and you will never again "waste valuable minutes of your time" with it.

    that said, LET'S GO CAPS!!!!

Ovie may be a player with great skills, but in the definition of a true great player, usually it involves class and dignity.. Neither of these attributes are part of Ovie. He cries wolf after be-heading Dustin Brown last year, video shows he threw a deliberate elbow and when the Kings came to him in defense of Brownie, Ovie starts in with the fake injury... He is a POS....

this is classic media. i believe the reporter simply reported what he was told. and yet, we continue to eat up the media with whatever they may tell us. this person shot and killed 4, no wait 6, 10 dead in shooting rampage. health care is free, healthcare is being paid by the rich and given to the lazy, youll be fined if you dont accept our healthcare. tom cable's story...hanson got that broken jaw by slipping and falling over something, i never punched him.
    quit eating up the media.

Ovechkin is the best individual player. Crosby is the best team player. Ovechkin needs to learn to play as a team and then he'll get a shot at the cup. Simple as that. I'm not Crosby-hugger because his hometown is an hour from my house. Crosby is a better hockey player because the game isn't solely based on your individuality. That's why Crosby won a cup as captain at such a young age. Malkin has learned over the years to play as a team and that's why he contributed so much to help Pittsburgh win their 3rd cup.

DUTCH( DOUCHE)....So you're trying to tell us that you don't care if Crosby or Malkin get the MVP. You're full of it. The only reason you feel that way is because Ovie won it the past 2 years. We can see right through you brother. Keep the Cup. Ovie will get his eventually. As i said previously,in 15 years from now the only ones who will know who won the Cup in the 2008-2009 season will be Pens fans. But people will remember who was the best player of that time . Maybe Sid ,maybe Ovie. Time will tell.
    You still SUCK!!!!

@42 mjmanen- I'm your huckleberry. Pens fan who thinks Ovechkin is a "better player" than Crosby. I think OV is the best individual player in the League, but I'd rather have the guys on the Penguins than Ovechkin, you have salary cap issues and team player issues. The chemistry with Crosby has obviously worked very nicely for the Penguins so Ovechkin can pick up all the individual hardware he wants, team results are what I care about.

Crosby and Ovechkin are both great players each with their own issues. Crosby complains too much and Ovechkin has no class. People may love how physical Ovechkin plays but it is bound to create injuries for him.

I'm neither a fan of the caps or pens and it's pretty easy to say Ovechkin is the best player inthe league by far. Most of Crosbys pts are assists. Now Ovechkins are mostly goals. Not to mention how he hits. You don't find many 65 goal scorers that can ring your bell.

I don't even think Crosby is the best Player on his team! Malkin is some player. Plus it's hard to shake the crying to the refs Crosby did for the first 2 yrs.

And he gets hurt every yr as well at some pt. Which is funny cause Malkin and Alex r hurt now usually it's the other way around.

But Crosby is a great player. Would love to have him on my team. But just nt before Ovechkin. No matter what Don cherry thinks...

Hmmm Did I miss the Puck Daddy apology for chasing and creating an imaginary headline? Perhaps next time instead of using such great journalistic instincts to say, "are you serious", the interviewer will actually seek some facts.

Example "4 to 5 weeks? Are you just joking or is your injury more severe than has been reported."

BTW Semin has some great ocean front property in Siberia for sale.. :)

Big "O" needs to understand that he is the leader of a team that usually does not do well in the playoffs. If he is out for a month that is big news.I hope it don't happen but his career could be taken out short for an injury so Big"O" appreciate what talents you have and enjoy the moments now.Joking around about this is not funny.

Bet the Caps team brass thought this was real funny. I'm sure his teammates are waiting for his debut @ the Laugh Shack. Not funny, dumba$$. This is one reason why the avg sports fan in the US doesn't follow hockey - it's too WWE for them at times. Those of us who are hockey nuts try to sell the game to those people by saying, "watch this Ovechkin guy, he's pretty amazing". Then he does stupid stuff like this and they come back with, "yeah, but he's kind of a jackass". Keep your trap shut, Captain Caveman, and let your play do the talking. Want to make us all laugh? Try leading your team to the Stanley Cup, seems quite unlikely with you as the leader of the team.
