Ovechkin scores on return from injury

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Two-time NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin(notes) scored in his return from injury to help the Washington Capitals beat the New York Rangers 4-2 on Tuesday.

Ovechkin missed six games and was out for two weeks because of an undisclosed upper body injury, believed to be a strained left shoulder, but came back with a flourish. He netted his NHL-leading 15th goal, in only 15 games, while New York’s Sean Avery(notes) sat in the penalty box. That erased the Rangers’ 1-0 advantage in the first period.

Marian Gaborik(notes) scored twice for the Rangers and moved into a tie with Ovechkin with 15 goals.

I refuse to watch another lame a@# Ranger effort again . Also Go screw yourself Brashear! The most pathetic excuse for a hockey player in the history of the game. Torts , same as it ever was. Wewill never see 1994 or anything even close again!

Great win Caps. Nice goal by Bradley, too. Congrats to Boudreau for a fast 100 wins. I have lived in DC for 23 years and I am finally gaining a lot of respect for the Caps. But I still have to say GO FLYERS!

Hatercap.........You forgot to mention MVP X2 . You Newbie hockey fans are such @#$%. Ovie isn't a dirty player. He hits ,he gets hit (without whining) ,he plays hard every shift, and he scores. Not too many of those type of players in the league anymore. I'd love to see him win the Cup. But if he doesn't,at least I get to see him play for Our team every year.He makes hockey fun to watch again. The NHL is (or was) getting too European. Boring, too much passing, not enough checking, not enough fans. Players like Ovie and Crosby and their rivalry, can generate more interest in the game. We need it.
I guess Ovie would join other mvps like Bobby Hull,Tony Esposito,Brad Park, Stan Mikita,Eddie Giacomin, and many other trophy winners who never won a cup. All non-deserving in your little world.
But what happens to all you Ovie haters if he does win the Cup? Straight jackets?
    Hate on Cub Scout !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WELCOME BACK OVIE!!! HE IS THE GREATEST SHOW ON ICE!! BEST SCORER IN THE NHL!!! AND THE BEST PLAYER IN HOCKEY TODAY (AT LEAST IN MY OPINION, AND IF YOU DISAGREE, YOU CAN KISS HIS HARTS) thank god he's finally back. 4-2 w/o him, gonna be even better with him (the loss of knuble hurts though)

Screw Ovechkin! Screw the Capitals! I hope someone takes a run at him and he gets what he deserves. He is a dirty player, a great talent but a dirty player. His day will come then he will be gone and forgotten having won nothing. MVP means nothing if you can't lead your team to a championship which he will NEVER do. Bye now!

Well said, Anton K. Why people just can't enjoy good hockey and ALL of the dynamic players in the NHL today is beyond me.

Am I biased towards Malkin & Crosby, of course, I'm a Pens fan, but for people to say Ovie sucks is assanine... for the haters to say any of these 3 suck is really just plain foolishness.

Ray Bourque was not a great defenceman until he was forty because he had never won the cup. Amazing that anyone would think that a year in Denver as a declining superstar outranks what he did all those years in Boston. give your head a shake!

HAHA Crosby is held pointless for four games in a row for the first time in his career, imagine that no Malkin no points!

To 165 . For your information , Malkin was hurt about four weeks ago but has only missed four games so far . He will miss more and do you know what ........ We are still winning . We did it last year when Crosby was hurt too . I think he ( Crosby ) missed about four weeks last year ..and we won the Cup . Thats a .... of a lot more than your team will ever do . I watch the Caps all the time just because I live here in Maryland now . I walk down the streets with my hat and shirt on and listen to some people wine about how the Pens .... I love it . Maybe we will beat you again this year when - after the Caps goalies choke and Ovy turns the puck over and Crosby scored , just like he did in game seven to wipe your Caps out . That was GREAT . I just wish that I was in DC at that game .

I love it. Sorry to all the 2nd teer NHL cheap shot artist Goons. No way the Caps and OV will revel were the injury is. Thats all we need is Ruttu and others going after the moneymaker of the NHL..

The biggest fallacy that people who do not watch every CAPS game is, that they think that OV always plays with Backstrom and Semin. Coach Boudreau mixes his lineups all the time. Last year OV was playing a lot of times with Federov and Kozlov.
This year it has been mostly with Backstrom and Semin. But OV has seen plenty of games where he has played with Morrison and Knuble, with Backstrom playing with Semin and Laich. And in all cases, whoever OV's linemates are, their points totals are a lot higher when he is playing on their line.
Backstrom and Semin do however almost always play with OV on the powerplay, similarly to how Crosby plays with Malkin a lot on the powerplay.
And don't ask me why I have stooped so low as to even look at this thread, and make a comment on this ridiculous perpetual OV-Crosby-Malkin argument, especially when there isn't much difference between these three talented players. Any two of these players, in any combination, and playing with the Penguins, will yield similar results.

@ 178 Kris - Varlamov hardly played well in that series against Pittsburgh. It was against the Rangers where he played amazing.
@ 180 mooseman - I like Ovechkin, but what records did he smash? I am not aware of Ovechkin holding a meaningful NHL record.
And are you seriously arguing that Ovechkin is not surrounded by talent? Backstrom as the center and one of Semin or Knuble on the opposite wing? That's incredible talent, certainly more than Crosby has with Kunitz and Guerin.
As to Ovechkin being the best player in the league, no argument here. But is certainly helps having Backstrom and Green feed pucks to him.

Ovi takes coke. He said so, himself, in the last paragraph. By definition, drugs are for losers. I guess it helps with whatever he broke, because as he said: "...I don’t have nothing broken", indicating there's something broken.
