Blues’ Brewer makes surprise return to lineup
ST. LOUIS (AP)—St. Louis captain Eric Brewer(notes) made a surprise return to the Blues’ lineup Thursday night against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The defenseman had not played since Dec. 11 after having back surgery twice to repair a sciatic nerve that at one point was thought to be career threatening. He also had minor knee surgery last month.
“When I get to a point where I’m wondering why I’m just practicing, then I’ll play,” Brewer said earlier this week. “… We’re getting close.
“I feel better. I’m starting to get more of my feet under me.”
The 30-year-old Brewer has been skating with the Blues regularly since the team returned from its trip to Sweden on Oct. 5. He missed 58 games a season ago and 68 total, including the first 10 games this season. Brewer was cleared to play by his doctor in Los Angeles.
“It was all up to Brew … he set today as his target, and the doctors cleared him,” Blues president John Davidson said. “He’s been able to practice hard for some time now, and he wants to get back in there. It’s not going to be easy, but we’ve got to get him back to speed.”
Brewer is in the third year of a four-year, $17 million contract signed in 2007. He had a goal and five assists in 28 games last season.
“Here’s a guy that was worried about his career,” Davidson said. “He took the full time to rehab properly and now he’s in a position where he feels 100 percent. A lot of athletes retire because of back injuries. It’s not a fun issue. This injury could have been debilitating. But here it is the end of October and he’s ready to go. I’ve got to give him credit.”

You said: "man, how the once-mighty Blues have fallen...."
I responded by pointing out the strength of their prospects, as the #1 ranked organization by hockeysfuture. I cited several players who've either already made an impact (Perron, Oshie, Berglund) and several players who are going to make an impact soon (Pietrangelo, Eller, Palushaj).
I then proceeded to point out that trading Pronger for Brewer, Woywitka and Lynch was a deal made by the Lauries.
You stated: "maybe they'll take the coyotes place in the desert when they finally dissolve and move out...then someone with hockey-sense in St Louis can bring back the glory days..."
Dave Checketts and JD are the new sheriffs in town. They have the team on the right track, and to blame them for Eric Brewer being on this team is lunacy. At worst, they signed him to the expensive contract because they still felt the need to justify the trade. The contract was signed based on a period of time where Brewer was performing quite well. Now, he's out with both his back and the knee, insurance will kick in, the Blues cap hit will be far less and Brewer will be gone anyway. If you think they're not playing this angle, you're sorely mistaken. Within the next 2-3 years, the Blues defense corp will be Johnson, Pietrangelo, Cole, Colaiacovo, Jackman, Polak, with a strong 7-8 of Junland and Fairchild and David Rundblad somewhere down the road probably taking the spot of Jackman.
But you think that this team is grossly mismanaged by people with no hockey sense? You're living in the past, man. Most sensible Blues fans would never consider the trainwreck of the last days of Laurie to be equivalent to the renaissance we're seeing unfold before our eyes with JD and Checketts in charge.

#1 ranked prospect pipeline in the NHL: Eric Johnson, David Perron, David Backes, Patrick Berglund, TJ Oshie, Roman Polak already with pro experience; Alex Pietrangelo, Lars Eller, Aaron Palushaj, Ian Cole all flying up the pike ready to join the team this year or next, high ranked goaltending prospects Jake Allen and Ben Bishop seasoning in Peoria, not to mention many others who should develop into solid NHL players.
Don't blame the current management for Eric Brewer being on this team. That was all the Lauries, and unless you've been living under a rock since then, you should know that they're long gone and there's a new sheriff in town who's building a team that's well balanced and likely to be around a while.

with those stats (6 whole pts in 28 frigging games) he'd be lucky to be a 3rd stringer in columbus
