Official word of Bruins at Fenway likely Wednesday

  • Print

BOSTON (AP)—The National Hockey League is coming to Fenway Park.

The league is expected to announce at a news conference there Wednesday that the Boston Bruins will play the third annual Winter Classic at the home of the Boston Red Sox on Jan. 1. The opponent is expected to be the Philadelphia Flyers or the Washington Capitals.

The NHL said Friday the news conference is being held to “make a major announcement concerning a special event.” The league did not respond Friday to an e-mail request for comment.

Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs said in late May that he expected the game to be at Fenway and that the NHL would make an official announcement in July.

In the NHL’s other two outdoor games on New Year’s Day, Pittsburgh played Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008 and Detroit played Chicago at Wrigley Field this year.

How about 2 games on January 1st, one in the east followed by one in the west that starts 3-4 hours later or something. For this season it could be Boston vs Caps/Flyers/whoever and then maybe Vancouver/Calgary vs whoever. It would not be too much. Who in the hell would be like, "oh, I can only watch one game today, no way I could watch 2 outdoor games on New Years Day, that would just be horrible...can't wait for all of those Thanksgiving football games though" ?

if you get both american and canadian teams in the game them you get more people watching. If you do two games like has been suggested then you win both. One in fenway and one in some place in Canada. both coutries would watch and the nhl would GROW. Image the fever in boston and in toronto for example. Bettman think out of the box for a change. It would not be watered down cuz each nation would mostlikely only watch the game in their country.

Yeah, I'd much rather watch the Flyers. You know they won a cup 34 years ago. Maybe they could play the Islanders (26 years).

    I have changed my mind.

Islanders vs the Flyers at Happy Valley. I can't wait. Somebody call Gary Bettman and brew me a big pot of coffee so I can get through the first period.

and for the record even though we call the Rangers and orginal 6 team because of the post detraction era leaving the Rangers still afloat....the orginal NY team was the New York Americans...so if you want to talk about storied histories we can talk about history. And history proved much like the Cubs in chicago...that the Rangers are nothing but garbage and have been been for the better part of a century

Ok, now, please tell what exactly the "long and storied" history of the NY Rangers is? That is aside from sucking tremendously for 50 years...then selling out thier entire franchise of players to sign rent-a-players in order to eeek out two game 7's to win , now hold youre breath, one cup in over 50 years! Then of course right after, returning to thier inept ways by missing the playoffs completely for the next decade. And to the idiot who said that the this is a "tv" event so why not have the Rangers media market invovled. While YEs the NY media market is the biggest on the planet but just ask Gary Buttman and NHL officials that decided that every weekend hockey fans were forced to watch the lowly Rangers games on the national feed while usuing that exact same logic. And the rating were dismal and the games complete snoozers. But hey at least they are not Phoenix right. What a joke

And I agree with some of you that are saying it should be the Rangers or the Canadiens.
Personally I think the Canadiens would be better, but at least if it was New York it would New York at Boston. F the Flyers and the Caps. We want an Original Six matchup.

WAIT which team is going to trade for Ty Conklin because it is not a winter classic with out him in goal. I agree it should be Montreal and Boston but since Montreal did an outdoor game even though it was not the winter classic they would not have them in it. Boston and Philly would be a great match up, as for the Rangers I could see them doing a Islanders vs. Rangers match up in Yankee Stadium next year.

Many of you so called hockey enthusiasts are forgetting your history. The Broad Street Bullies changed the face of hockey (with a black eye) when the beat the Bruins in 74. This was the first non original 6 team to win the cup.....and arguably the biggest cup upset in history as it was against the Bruins led Orr. Speaking of Orr...he single handedly changed the defensive position and the ice scape of hockey as well. This is a great match up..the 2 best sports cities in the states in my opinion. I am syked as they are also both east conference contenders now.

Great. Maybe they can line the rink up next to that green piece of feces and the players can shoot at it in practice. We got enough of the nistalgic ballpark last season. Isn't there an 80,00 seat soccer stadium in Canada they could use to really maximize ticket sales for there only regular season maketable event? Fenway's a crap hole. The NHL could do way better than this.

It should be either the Canadiens and Rangers.

    And to "My Daddy":

The Classic is designed to be a TV event. Remember when it snowed in the Buffalo game and the NHL was salivating? They weren't doing so because it would be really cool for the 125K sitting in the stands. It was because it looked good visually on TV. And Fenway Park is a great, nostalgic choice as was Wrigley (again it's about TV and a storyline). Happy Valley??? OK...lol.

Lastly, the Rangers are an original 6 team with a storied history (good and bad) and with a very loyal fan base in the #1 TV market.

    Happy Valley........that is hilarious.

They should just cover the original 6 match ups first, since they kind of started it that way.

    DET vs CHI

    MON vs TOR

    NY vs BOS

Then open the flood gates... to various match ups.

Why in the hell do the Flyers or Capitals even factor into this!?!?! It should be Bruins/Canadiens!! Any true hockey fan knows there is no better rivalry in the game!!! If the league allows one of those other teams to play in such a monumental game, they should be smacked up side the head!!!

Actually First L, the game that started all this out door play was a college game by the University of Michigan and Michigan State at State's football field. It was put together to set a record for highest attendance of a hockey game. The next year is when the oilers and Canadians had their's. And for everyone who's whinning abot why they don't play it at our big 'ol football field that holds over 100K, it would be silly. First, having that many seats, the price of tickets would stay low, supply and demand. Second, the place would look empty on the televised broadcast because people would be so far away and not be able to be cought on camera. Third, the NHL is using historic parks that everyone knows and relates to, to draw in baseball fans, trying to bolster our (the NHL's) market by reeling in other sports fans. My prediction, Boston Washington, Betteman will use another one of his eastern conference golden boys for ratings. GO WINGS!!!!!!

The FLYERS and Pens at Beaver Stadium would be awesome, but the NHL doesn't want to embarrass the Penquins. With Beaver Stadium holding 125,000 people, just imagine the embarassment for the Penquins with 124,000 FLYERS fans, and 1,000 Pens fans :-)

    GO FLYERS GO!!

Jason G. Actually, the Edmonton vs Canadiens game was not actually a Winter Classic. That was a game put together just for the sake of those two teams wanting to do it. If I remember right, it was only televised in Canada. The first Winter Classic was Buffalo vs Pittsburgh. At least the first game using that name. The Edmonton/Canadiens game started it all, but was not called a Winter Classic.

With new football and baseball stadiums going up in the Twin Cities, Minnesota should be a shoe-in to host the Winter Classic.

Of course, Betmann would still rather push Miami and Phoenix as viable spots for NHL hockey, so who knows.
