Puck Headlines: Pominville captain; Marchand vs. Bruins Bear

• Our first thought was, like yours, that this was a tribute to the Village People. Nope: Carey Price(notes) is going Native Canadian while also honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month, according to Dave Arrigo: "Carey decided to go back to his native roots this time around. With him being Native Canadian we have on the one side an image of Anahim Lake, where he's from, as well as a tribute of the elder wearing a headdress. Then of course there's the dream-catcher on the forehead and the pink ribbon on the chin area in support of breast cancer for October." [Canadiens]

• The Buffalo Sabres named Jason Pominville(notes) captain today, which is weird because his name isn't Thomas Vanek(notes). Said John Vogl on Capt. Pommer: "He's on the ice with his teammates nearly every day, and he's always front and center in the dressing room to give his take on what is going wrong or right." Thomas Vanek, Drew Stafford(notes), Paul Gaustad(notes) and Derek Roy(notes) assistant captains. [Sabres Edge]

• So much for "hustle plays" on icings: Eric Nystrom(notes) is placed on waivers by the Minnesota Wild. [Hockey Wilderness]

Dustin Penner(notes) has a "lower body injury," which doesn't necessarily mean his gut. From Los Angeles Kings Coach Terry Murray: "He was out there (on the ice) for 40 minutes today, which is an improvement from the practice that we had in Hamburg. It was probably 30, 35 minutes there. So it's improving. It's going to take some time. He's not going to be ready for tomorrow." [LA Kings Insider]

• If you've not read it, this collection of facts and figures from the NHL on Opening Nights is fun. Anaheim Ducks: 4-13-0 on opening night all-time. [NHL]

Max Pacioretty(notes) of the Montreal Canadiens isn't sold on curved glass preventing calamity, like when Zdeno Chara(notes) turn-buckled him last year: "There still is a divider there and there still is the ability to make a vicious hit there and cause injury." [THN]

• "A Minnesota judge threw out a felony charge against the brother of hockey enforcer Derek Boogaard(notes) on Thursday, saying the facts didn't support the accusation in the player's overdose death earlier this year." [CP]

• The New York Islanders are asking fans to help pick their new goal song. For the record: The sound of a moving van in reverse is not among the options. (Also for the record: Motley Crue, FTW) [Lighthouse Hockey]

• When you're just not strong enough yet for NHL stardom. Or in Taylor Hall's(notes) case, getting stronger to become a star. [Bourne]

Ilya Bryzgalov(notes) is relaxed for his Philadelphia Flyers debut. And why not? It's just hockey. [Broad Street Bull]

• The New York Rangers add the defenseman they've been looking to add all week: Jeff Woywitka(notes), off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens. [Rosen]

Edmonton Oilers center Sam Gagner(notes) might be shipped to Toronto for a defenseman? Hmmmm …. [Lowetide]

• George Richards gets the lowdown on players numbers for the Florida Panthers. Stephen Weiss(notes) on No. 9: "I was pretty close family friends with Adam Graves and I would meet up with him at Maple Leaf Gardens when they were in town. And my uncle wore this number in college. You want to emulate people who you look up to. I wanted to be them, so I took their number.'' [On Frozen Pond]

• Bold predictions for the 2011-12 season, including "Matt Cooke will not be Shanna-banned….But his play and effectiveness on the ice will be limited as he struggles to adjust his game." [Pensburgh]

• More predictions. On the St. Louis Blues: "Provided they can get past the usual 400+ man-games lost to injury (who the hell are the team doctors for these guys?), this is a high-powered, physical team that no one wants to play against." [Pegasus News]

• Coach Claude Julien said that Chris Clark(notes) wouldn't have been in the top 12 forwards for the Boston Bruins, thus undermining his intangibles as a leader. Hence, Clark was cut. [Bruins Blog]

• It's a great day for hockey when Michael Farber is writing again on Opening Night. [SI]

• Kevin Smith will be giving away a free backyard hockey rink on Halloween on his Smodcast Internet Radio show.  Check out www.smodcast.com and The contest page and full video of "The Backyard Rinc. Song" at www.backyardrinc.com.

• Finally:

Ladies and gentlemen, the Bruins Bear has returned. There can be no greater sign that puck is back. (Featuring a Brad Marchand(notes) cameo!)
