The 21-year old Markstrom stole the show in Montreal as the Panthers edged the Canadiens 2-1. Making his second NHL start, Markstrom made 40 saves as Florida received goals from Tomas Fleischmann(notes) and Scottie Upshall(notes). The rookie Markstrom likely won the starting job with his performance in net:
It was vintage Jagr during Philadelphia's 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. No. 68 scored twice and setup one of Scott Hartnell's(notes) two tallies to open his goal account on the season. The goals were Jagr's first in the NHL since April 6, 2008. Both Jagr goals came in the form of breakaways with his first one beginning with a beautiful feed from Claude Giroux(notes) and ending with an old-school salute:
Spelling Henrik Lundqvist(notes) for his first start of the year, Biron stopped 28 shots as the Rangers ended their Canadian road trip 3-1-0 with a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Ryan Callahan(notes) scored the winner on the power play with 11:19 left in the third period by banking a centering pass of the skate of Zach Bogosian(notes).
Honorable mention: Danny Briere's(notes) assist was his 600th NHL point ... Sergei Bobrovsky(notes) made 24 saves ... Phil Kessel(notes) scored his league-leading ninth goal ... Erik Cole(notes) scored his first goal for Montreal ... Marcel Goc(notes) won 12 of his 16 faceoffs ... The Rangers will finally play their home opener on Thursday night against Toronto after a seven-game road trip to start the season due to renovations at Madison Square Garden ... Callahan was credited with four blocked shots.
Did you know? Montreal fell to 1-5-2, continuing its worst start in 70 years. It is the deepest the Canadiens have gone into a season with only one win since 1941-42, when they got off to a 1-10-1 start that included a pair of losses to the Brooklyn Americans. (AP)
Dishonorable mention: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger(notes) left the game early in the first period after taking a stick to the eye. GM Paul Holmgren said he'll be out at least 2-3 weeks ... Montreal has lost six in a row ... Max Pacioretty(notes) left the game with an upper-body injury and did not return.
