When teams introduce new jerseys and they go with an all-black design, we cringe. There are a few exceptions, however, like the San Jose Sharks' "Black Armor" look; but then you have ones like the New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes and Ottawa Senators.
We're going to add the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters to the list of exceptions after they revealed that on Feb. 21 during "Neon Night" they will sport these futuristic jerseys to fit the theme. They'll look straight outta Tron. (Did anyone see the movie Tron?)
(Fair warning: donning the jerseys digitizes you into the ENCOM mainframe, where Sark is waiting to destroy you. But don't forget that you can manipulate the mainframe's reality in your quest to get back.)
According to the team, neon sunglasses will be handed out to the first 5,000 fans so they can help fit in. Sadly, the Monsters say that the jerseys will not end up glowing in the dark, which is the biggest disappointment here. If you're going to go neon, you have to go glow-in-the-dark. They missed out on hosting the world's first hockey game under a giant black light.
No word yet on what other activities will happen during "Neon Night," but let us suggest a pre-game rave where fans can recreate the Jennifer Lopez "Waiting for Tonight" video or maybe "Neon" Deion Sanders dropping the puck during the ceremonial face-off.
Jerseys will be auctioned post-game, although if you ask us, you should have to win them in a Light Cycle match.
