So Jordan Staal(notes) gets asked about his Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Rob Scuderi(notes) after Game 6, in which Scuderi helped save a goal with a scramble in the crease with less than a minute remaining in the 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Staal proceeded to baffle the media with the most inside of inside jokes. Click here or on this image of an impish Jordan for the clip; the cringe humor is about 35 seconds in.

For the video impaired, Staal said, "Scudsy ... he's The Piece." He then does a 360-eyeroll that usually only comes when one drops a politically incorrect reference (or cuts a fart ... one of the two). Staal starts giggling to himself as a reporter inquires about the observation ("The what?") before ending the segment with, "Nah, nah, don't worry about it ... I'm going to leave it at that."

Naturally, the reporters covering the Final sensed the sort of locker room jocularity that leads to "boys will be boys" hockey human interest stories: shaving cream pies to the face and the like. So the question was asked of Scuderi: The hell does "The Piece" mean?

Mark Spector of Sportsnet writes that the defenseman offered The Piece accord:

"I made a pretty brutal quote a couple of days ago," Scuderi explained. "I was supposed to say, 'a' piece to the puzzle, but instead I said, 'the' piece to the puzzle. So, it's not Sid, it's not Geno. Apparently it's me."

So vital was this new information that Penguins coach Dan Bylsma was asked about it in the post-Game 6 news conference (did Michel Therrien ever field a Free Candy question?):

Q. I don't know if you'd pick up on it, but I guess his teammates were just killing him over a quote he had, calling him the piece, talking about Rob Scuderi, just he kind of earned it tonight, just his play, the blocks, the block at the end, that whole bit?

COACH BYLSMA: Well, he has been taking it for the way the quote came out. I know he said it takes a lot of pieces and I am just a piece, not the piece. Rob Scuderi doesn't go unnoticed for our team. He gets more notoriety for doing the job he's done in the playoffs against guys like Ovechkin and Staal. But he's a steady defender, he dives in front of a puck. He'll pay the price in the corners to get a puck out or make a play defensively. He's also excellent on the penalty kill. He's charged with our match?up situation on a lot of nights, and that's something you can't really put a value on if you're not really there in the trenches with him. He's a big part of our team, and a big part of our defensive corps. And a lot of nights sets the tone for how we play defense.

So there you have it. Soon-to-be-free-agent "Scuds" -- whom Sports Illustrated called a "heretofore no-name defenseman" for some reason -- is now "The Piece." Which according to Urban Dictionary also translates into "a gun, knife, or other weapon" and "anything used for the smoking of various drugs, most commonly marijuana, most commonly a pipe."

In other words: "The Piece" is one of the season's best new player nicknames. Can you recall any of the others, besides Mayor T.J. Oshie(notes)?

All I know is that The Piece's play during that scrum in the crease at the end of the game saved (pun alert!) the game for the Penguins.

They should call him "The Butterfly" after those two left-foot stops.
Why was McG calling for a penalty shot there???

Scuds has been solid the whole playoff run ... just look at his play against Ovie during the washington series ... he effectively shut down the only real scorer that DC has ... if Scuds didn't hold his ground like he did that would have been a totally different series ... Ovie could have had 12 goals ...

    Scuds = typical unimaginative nickname.
    The Piece = brilliant.

Scuds has been great... but I can guarantee he'll command a hefty pay raise on the open market, go to a team, and become invisible. See Greg DeVries, Derek Morris, Karel Rachunek, etc...

he went from Scud missile, the WMD to the omniscient sounding, The Piece.
let's just hope his play on Friday prevents the Pens from going into pieces.
    (ok, groan)

pensfan1982 - scuderi did not shut down Ovechkin. Dude had more points in the series than Crosby and Malkin. Scuderi has played his ass off in the playoffs, but don't make him out to be freakin Bobby Orr.

The Piece, eh? Great moniker. But would someone puhleeze come up with one for the Wings' coach. I am sick and tired of that smug, smarmy look on his face and would like to see it change on Friday night when the Pens rock the house in Detroit. But what really gets me is the complete favoritism shown by the broadcasters on both NBC and Versus. Do they get paid a little more to stroke the Wings' egos? Do they get a bonus with every good thing they say about Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg? Frankly I'll be glad to see the playoffs end -- if only for the fact that I won't have to listen to these idiots run their mouths any longer. Reminds me of some of the Sabres fans I've encountered in my 31 years in Buffalo -- can't compliment a player from another team to save their souls. I've tried being loyal to the Sabres, but my heart will always belong to my Penguins!!!!

scuderi did an interview and said that the he was one of the pieces to the pens success, but instead of prefacing it with "one of" he said he was the piece.

Wings fan here, PIT is a weak team of pansy chumps that need the league to get them where they are. They go down in DET on Friday in spite of Bettman carrying them to this point. If they do get the Cup you'll notice the lack of misconducts the Wings will get vs what the Pens did in game 5 and it wasn't even an elimination game. All you PIT fans are as phony as your team.

#13, seriously you thought the commentators favored DET. You are insane. How many of your fancy boys did they interview after the game. How many times did they say NOTHING when calls were overlooked on your team of chumps. The GWG shouldn't have even been able to be taken as Lidstrom was held but NOTHING was said about it except by CBC (from what I've heard). Maybe you can shut the sound off and listen to your panties wetting while watching the game and that would be biased enough to PIT for you. What a joke.

Friday will be Scuderi's last game as a Penguin. See: Malone, Ryan.
He claims that he knows that there is something special in Pittsburgh, that players that have left regret doing so (except Hossa, lol). But I can't fault the guy who wants to get paid.

i'm a wings fan, and i can safely say that the NBC coverage favored detroit. when they weren't making the requisite about crosby being the pinnacle of hockey, the commentators called nonexistent penalties on the penguins and described routine, common sense plays like blocking passing lanes and forechecking as something that only mike babcock could dream up and only the big red machine could execute.

Actually, to me it seemed the NBC hacks were drooling over Detroit, the at some point switched sides when it seemed like the Pens were going to win. Am I the only one who noticed McGuire is madly in love with Osgood? I bet his little note sheet has I love Oziie and Pierre Osgood doodled all over it.

When those NBC clowns started that crap about Scuderi covering the puck I felt like firing my .44 into the television. Obviously they have already forgotten Zetterberg and Zetterberg part Deux !! And the Versus coverage is no better. I think they are pimpng their wives in the Detroit locker room between periods . One game left for all the marbles. GO PENS !!!

    LadyBings...
should we even mention McGuire's reaction to Rob Scuderi making 3 saves in the crease? as soon as the whistle blew...
"did somebody on the penguins just close their hand on the puck?"
"yes, someone in black closed their hand on the puck. right there!"
he even tried to convince himself that's what happened after they showed 2 replays.
then they showed the in-net camera and oops, little pierre pooped his pants.
scuderi zetterberg in the crease. (hell of a clear bert had after his stick shattered on that PK, however)
