One of the fun parts of the NHL's announcement of who the upcoming participants in the Winter Classic will be is the intense fan speculation at what throwback jerseys the teams will wear. Since the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres went old school in the first Winter Classic in 2008, it's been an annual tradition for teams to don historical jerseys on New Year's Day and make some extra cash in the process.
Tuesday afternoon, the NHL held a press conference at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh to formally announce the 2011 Winter Classic between the Penguins and the Washington Capitals on January 1.
Before the press conference began, Tarik el-Bashir of the Washington Post caught a glimpse of the rink setup inside the stadium as well as the team logo's that will be used to help promote the game. The sight of these logos kicks up the speculation at what vintage jerseys the Capitals and Penguins will wear during the game. Pittsburgh will reveal its look sometime this fall, while Washington won't officially unveil its Winter Classic look until its fan convention on October 2.
Considering the Capitals used the same jersey design for the first 20 years of their existence, it's no surprise that going by the logo seen today, it appears they will be going for the popular red, white and blue look.
In the Penguins' history, the skating penguin logo was used only during their inaugural season of 1967-68. That logo wasn't used on the jersey, only pucks and official letterhead. If the use of that same logo for the Winter Classic is a hint, they might bring the jerseys from that season back, keeping the blue in style that they brought back against Buffalo in 2008.
Since it's the Capitals and Penguins and both franchises have Patrick Division roots along with a memorable rivalry, it would be cool to see the Penguins lose the blue and use the design from their early 1990's Stanley Cup teams and keep with the black and gold tradition at Heinz Field.
What do you think about these potential looks for the Capitals and Penguins at the Winter Classic? Any other jersey designs you'd rather see from these teams?
