What a kick in the teeth for the Detroit Red Wings: Center Valtteri Filppula(notes) was hit by Gilbert Brule(notes) in the second period in Edmonton on Thursday night, fell awkwardly and ended up breaking his wrist. He's done for 6-to-8 weeks.
"It's not good," Henrik Zetterberg(notes) added. "It's tough to lose a player and especially Fil, he plays a lot of minutes and plays in all situations, so it's a tough break for us."
General manager Ken Holland said the team would not be recalling anyone from the minors, as they have enough forwards to go around.
Filppula has been the team's best forward in October, and was a key center especially after Mike Babcock decided to put center Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk(notes) together.
They're going to miss that versatility, as Filppula was spotted in several places in the lineup -- from the middle of Todd Bertuzzi(notes) and Dan Cleary to skating with Ville Leino(notes) and Jason Williams(notes). His offense was heating up, too, with five points in hist last seven games.
Playing the next month and a half without Filppula and Johan Franzen(notes) (out until 2010 with an ACL tear) is going to really challenge this team's scoring depth; and especially players like Justin Abdelkader(notes) and Darren Helm(notes), who haven't gotten rolling yet. (Though Helm did score in the Wings' 6-5 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.)
There's more coverage of the injury from Ansar Khan of MLive.com. It's been said that Detroit couldn't catch break this season. Be careful what you wish for, huh?

As for the Wings, the team has enough depth to overcome the loss. As poorly as the Red Wings record mat look on paper, this team is getting closer to getting into sync with all the player changes. Another 5 or 6 games from now, I expect them to start winning consistantly and dominating teams like they have been known to do over the years.

No scoring + horrible goaltending. Not an ideal situation.

I hated bringing Burtuzzi back and he has only confirmed my thoughts. Brutal. Holland HAS to make some moveS. Not a move, but multiple moves. Not sure he can do what is needed. He is going to have to really earn his $ this year if he can turn the Wings around.

This is a real kick in the nuts though. This is going to show us what the wings are made of this year.

I think now, unfortunately, Holland's hand has been forced to make a move of some kind. The goaltending has been trash, and I just hope they dont let the slide continue for too long because the Olympic break will be here before Wings fans know it, and half the friggin roster is headed to Vancouver for God Sake. I get a bad feelin'.
On a positive note (if there can be any), Helm scored a gem of a goal vs .Edmonton and will now get every opportunity to prove his worth, ditto for Abdelkader. In the coming weeks we will see just exactly how deep this organization is.
