"If the Blues reach the Stanley Cup playoffs, this is the best story of the year in the league, hands down. And it still might be if they're edged out." - Ross McKeon, Yahoo! Sports.

What Ross the Boss is saying, in essence, is that whatever happens to the St. Louis Blues at this point is gravy.

They managed to stay in the race until April 7, despite crippling injuries and goalie turmoil and long odds in the middle of rebuilding. They saved their coach's job, if it was indeed jeopardized. And according to the math, they still have a better shot at making the postseason dance in the No. 8 seed than the team they're chasing, the Nashville Predators.

The two worst days of any hockey fan's year is when his or her team is eliminated or when his or her most hated team wins the Stanley Cup. Thing is, how pissed off can a Blues fan really be if the team falls short?

Isn't this borrowed time? Half the League has bitten their fingernails down to the bone, but there's this prevailing underdog vibe with the Blues that even when they're entering their most important game of the season, the mood's pretty light for the fans.

With regard to the detrimental health effects of high blood pressure and fists hitting rec room walls, that's an enviable place to be for a fan near playoff time.

Of course, there's three ways for this run to end: Qualifying for the playoffs; missing the cut in a valiant, respectable manner; or going out like a punk. And while the first two options will likely tie into this "icing on the cake" vibe, that last one might at least stoke a little fan angst.

The Blues still have a slight edge over the Predators in probability for the last playoff spot because their schedule is much more favorable, at least on paper: Tonight at the Phoenix Coyotes; Friday vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets; Sunday at the Colorado Avalanche.

So tonight is your "trap game," as the Coyotes have been a pesky group that won three in a row before a humbling defeat to Los Angeles (6-1) over the weekend. In fact, they were on a 6-2-1 run in their last nine games coming into Saturday's game against LA.

What's odd is that the Blues aren't behaving like they're on borrowed time. They enter games nervous, or enter other ones overconfident. So tonight, according to beat writer Jeremy Rutherford of the Post-Dispatch, managing the emotions will be one of the keys:

1. Relax: There's a lot on the line, but the Blues have shown this season that when they're playing composed, they can be really good.

2. Bury your chances: The Blues had 26 shots on goal Saturday in Dallas, but misfired on 23 more shots. It's been a problem all season. If you don't put the puck on net, you can't score. And if the Blues fail to build on leads, as they did in Dallas, it will come back to bite them.

3. Hope for a good game from Chris Mason: Mason was not at his best Saturday in Dallas, and while there were plenty of other problems that night, goaltending was a big issue. Mason has been spectacular since taking over the No. 1 job, and the Blues need him to play that way for three more games to have a chance at the postseason.

That last point is important: Mason's been very human in April, where he's gone 1-1-1 and given up over three goals a game (in contract to his 2.51 GAA this season). It's not hard to see what effect good goaltending has had on this Blues team during its run. They need Mason to come through badly tonight.

It's been one of the more underplayed stories in this mad dash between the Blues and the Predators: That Chris Mason, the deposed former goalie for the Preds, has a chance to lead his team into the playoffs while keep Nashville out.

Then again, Mason's already a story: 24-21-7, 2.51 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Just like the rest of this team, it's difficult to imagine fans being all that upset if he or the Blues falter at the end of this miracle run.

What's with all these Mason goalies I've never heard of breaking out this year?

Ross is a dope. The Habs not making the playoffs in there centennial season after screaming look at us all year would be the best story of the season, followed by Detroit losing a first round playoff series to anyone, then the Blues story.

    @ Almost Lewboski --
So what you're getting at, I think, is that if the Blues were to beat the Red Wings in the first round, it would be the story of the century.

I sat and watched the same crap last year that the Hawks went through, only to be eliminated on the last night. It sucks, I would much rather be in. Especially if it's the first time in almost a damn decade.

Except that the Habs are making the playoffs and won't be a story.....and Detroit losing a first round playoff series isn't a story nearly as large as St. Louis making the playoffs. I mean, I don't care one way or another who is revered and who is called (since we're in second grade, apparently) 'dopes', I'm just saying, if you're going to make a statement about someone being an idiot for their opinion, you should probably have a pretty solid defense.

I think you meant "in contrast" rather than "in contract". It's a minute difference, but there's a fine line between making sense and...well...not.

Ross, Sorry, but I must disagree. While the Blues story is great and deserving of recognition for Murray as coach. I feel the Blue Jackets have created just as interesting of a story as the Blues. Columbus has gone through the same myriad of injuries, utilizing 5 different goalies this year. They have used all different types of players from Syracuse and each one of them has contributed in a valuable way. Hitchcock has kept the team focused the whole year and hopefully in the next couple of days the team will begin to reap the rewards of their hard work. All of the fans in Columbus know this is just the beginning for this club. The crowds continue to grow and the emotions are running deep. So it is hard for me to understand how you can not feel this a bigger deal than the Blues. Especially considering the Jackets have never made the playoffs.
    GO JACKETS!!!

Couldn't agree more... St. Louis will be in, Nashville will be out. Let's just hope the Habs hang on. There's a full article of who will and who won't at http://thinairsportsblog.com/2009/04/06/whos-in-whos-out/. And let's also hope Detroit is out in the first round -- enough with the Wings. I'd rather watch some more interesting teams win (Chicago, St. Louis, Montreal...).

@ nyr I wish that were true; where in gods name would they find the cap money for Gaborik though?
Besides, they have to wait until 3 or 4 years after his prime before signing him... it's the New York way (see Jagr, Bure, Lindros, etc...)

While I'm a Blue Jackets fan, it's been great to watch St. Louis fight it out these last few weeks. They've gotten the better of us (and just about everybody else) during the stretch. Few more games to go...it's been fun.

The whole central division this year was pretty damn good. And three of the teams are young and have a bright future, should make for some great division games in the near future. And I agree about the Blue Jackets, great story.

I find it hard to believe that I found myself cheering for the Blues to make the playoffs...of course once they make it there are on their own. The only two teams I can cheer for in the post season are the Flames and the Wings. So yes it's usually my favorite team for the first round and them my boy hood idol's (Probert) team the rest of the way.

I've enjoyed watching this team post-lockout. Sure, the inevitable freefall out of the playoff race the two season prior to this was a bummer, but you could see the team improving and giving an effort.
It's all paying off this year. It's even sweeter knowing we're capable of it without Brewer, Kariya, or Legace.
It would be disappointing to be this close with the schedule we have left to fall short, but playing meaningful hockey in March and April is a nice feeling to have again.

Don't count the Preds out. They are leading their season series with each of their remaining opponents: Chicago, Detroit and Minnesota. And they've fought with the hearts of lions since the all-star break, despite an onslaught of injuries. I just hope Osgood's in goal at the Joe -- we need every point possible. Go Preds!

To WingeyDo - Red Wings fans, at least the real ones, will remember the first round pasting they got in 2006 by the Edmonton Oilers. I'm getting the same vibe from my Blues - a goalie standing on his head, desperation in every game, and enough momentum to knock off cocky complacency. Keep your smug attitude. It will do you well on the golf course in a month. Meanwhile, here's to Oshie, Perron, getting Kariya back, and keeping a good run going. GO BLUES!

With their lineup? Yep...pretty impressive. I guess Mason (er...Mason 2) is in a groove. I remember when they had to dig into their ahl goalies (Schwartz and the other guy) then one of them got hurt. Hilarious but I wonder where they'd be if they had a starting goaltender all year...
