Dany Heatley's(notes) representation has made a few things clear about his trade request to the Ottawa Senators, as reported by Wayne Scanlon of Canwest: That ice time and a "significant role" on a team are pretty important thing for him; that a rift with head coach Cory Clouston is one of, if not the primary, motivations for his request; and that he's done with the Senators, and there's no turning back.

So with that, the Ottawa Citizen opines that it's time to let Heatley go, with various statements of unabashed homerism: "If a hockey player can't be happy in a topnotch organization like the Senators, playing in a state-of-the-art arena in a great Canadian city for tens of millions of dollars, can he be happy anywhere?"

The fan matchmaking for Heatley has been interesting to watch since the announcement, on various blogs and forums. Among the most creative:

The Copper & Blue seizes upon a report that Heatley would waive his no-trade clause for the Edmonton Oilers, declaring a few assets untouchable while peddling the unintentionally hilarious package of "Gilbert/O'Sullivan." C&B has more today.

• From New York Rangers blog Blueshirt Banter: "Now I am definitely getting ahead of myself, but my proposal would be Heatley and Jason Smith for Michal Rozsival(notes), Nikolai Zherdev(notes), and the Rangers 1st round pick in this years draft." Somehow, it all comes back to waiving Wade Redden(notes).

Nick Maxon of the Bleacher Report would like to see the Minnesota Wild swap the rights to Marian Gaborik(notes) for Heatley. OK then.

Mike Kiley of Blackhawks Confidential backs either a Brian Campbell(notes) one-for-one swap or some sort of package involving Kris Versteeg(notes) (no one tell Sarah Spain about this) from the Chicago Blackhawks to Ottawa.

Finally, Adam Gretz of FanHouse takes a gander at the star player options for the Los Angeles Kings, with Heatley naturally being one of them.

There's also a new thread every few hours about Heatley over on the HF Boards' rumors page. Obviously, his contract, his no-trade clause and his trade demand will affect what the Senators get in return for Heater. Many of the fantasy GM proposals are likely higher than they should be, barring a bidding war.

The bottom line is that Heatley's availability changes the game for offseason player movement. Other than perhaps the Sedin Wonder Twins, is there another entry on TFP's free agent list that tops what Heatley can give you, even if you have to give something up for him?

If you were GM for a day, what do you think your team would have to give up to snag Heatley?

Until heatley realizes its a team sport hell be just another goal scorer with no rings. You cant win in this league by luck or just one or two players. Even the pens, as much as i hate them, they have their role players playing right. So go to edmonton get paid lucrative monies but when your at the bottom again dont start b1tch1n...... and no you cant play for detroit you seem like a real doocher.

That Blueshirt Banter proposal is brilliant, but doubtful it would go through. They'd have to waive Redden and then use Smith as a 7th defenseman, unless he miraculously sheds 5-6 years. I say do the deal, waive Redden, waive Smith, and vwallah! Cap space and a proven scorer to boot.

His value is mitigated even further by this being the second time he's requested a trade while in the middle of a contract. Apparently even being offered huge money for many years is not enough for him to get around his ice time being cut or his leadership being underutilized. Who will give up the farm for him when, for all they know, he'll request a trade if the coach yells at him, if he isn't given a C, if he's asked to accept that he still has room to grow as a player?

Heatley for Semin. I mean, I love Semin and all (stop laughing), but his turnovers and overpassing (and untimely penalties) are going to drive me insane. Plus, the Caps could avoid having to extend him too far and could turn instead to Backstrom, who I think ultimately will be a better and more necessary piece of the puzzle for them.

Most of these trade scenarios involve Ottawa allowing some team to erase their bad contracts while losing their best player.

Anyone think the Penguins could be a player for him? He's making close to the same money per season that Hossa would have been making had he accepted the Penguins offer, right? Maybe for Staal and a 1st round pick?

As a pens fan I dont want him, too much money....as a Blues fan I do only if they can take McKee or Kariya offer our hands (purely a moeny issue) and not take Boyes or Perron, Oshie, Berglund, EJ, Petro, or Backes.
#17 + McKee (preferred) + prospect like Ian Cole (+ Sonne or Palushaj added if they dont want to take those 3).
    Otherwise no dice.

Wonder if things are being held back until after the game tonight.
If true, I think LA give up too much, Pronger only has one year left

Not sure how they would pull it off, but I can't see the NYR or Flyers being able to help themselves regarding Heatley or Gaborik. If the Pens wanted him, they would have to give up Staal and a #1 probably. He's a headcase and was a total non-factor in the playoffs against the Pens, and there's no excuse for that team NOT making the playoffs this year.
