Puck Daddy - NHL

The most recent Weather Channel projection shows a high temperature of 27 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, Dec. 31 in Chicago, followed by snow showers and a high of 31 on New Year's Day. In other words, Winter Classic weather for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.

Trouble is that it's 57 degrees today, and then it'll be 41 degrees on Monday. That's creating challenges for the ice crew at Wrigley, according to the Chicago Tribune:

With rain and balmy temperatures in the upper 50s predicted for Saturday, the final layer of ice might have to wait a day. State-of-the-art equipment will ensure everything goes smoothly, an NHL spokesman said, and another cold snap is expected Sunday to help with the process. The crew made a layer of ice about three-quarters of an inch thick Monday before taking off for Christmas.

NHL facilities/operations manager Dan Craig said last week the original plan was to begin spraying another 20,000 gallons of water on the surface this weekend to thicken the ice to at least 2 inches, as NHL regulations stipulate. "All the team is going to be together by 6 p.m. [Friday], and we'll work around the clock," Craig said.

The crew was supposed to begin painting the ice Saturday, using about 350 gallons of paint. But the league can't control the weather, which plays such an important part in the outdoor spectacle.

The fluctuating temperatures have created a sense of uncertainty about the Classic among some in Chicago. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that "unusually warm weather, which was expected today, or rain could lead organizers to consider alternative plans for the Winter Classic." Tom Fornelli on NBC was direr in his coverage:

Though the NHL won't comment on the matter right now, there seems to be a possibility that the game could be postponed, with some ushers saying they were told that the contingency plan would be to have the game on January 2nd if they can't get the rink ready in time for Thursday.

Along with New Year's hangovers and Bob Costas, it appears weather concerns leading up to the Classic are now part of the annual tradition. Please recall headaches about high temps in balmy Buffalo last season.

Despite the gloom from some media, the Jan. 2 contingency is more a concern for rain than slightly above-average temps. Otherwise ... two teams playing on bad ice? In the NHL? Get out.

With cold weather and Craig's ice crew on the job, expect the show to go on as planned. At least we really, really, really hope it does.

As Ken Holland would say, we're all "men" here so sack up and drop the puck and at least go out there and sweat.
Just because Betman is trying to soften the game doesn't mean we can't make it a Man's league for one day.

I really don't see one bad day of warm weather ruining the 2nd Annual Winter Classic, with 4 days of good weather ahead and this crew in charge. Game on! I would like this winter classic team take it one step further in the next few years, have it played on a frozen pond somewhere in Canada between Montreal and Toronto. If that already hasn't crossed their minds. Fans would still flock to a real outdoor game then one played inside some stadium or field. Pond Hockey, now that's a Winter Classic any North American can relate to. Sure safety first. Those guys know, everybody knows safety first, Once they started this game outside it wont stop until they have played every venue possible, Buffalo in a snow storm, cant script that one, this season in Wrigley Field, why wasn't this place first, or even Yankee Stadium, yeah the house Ruth built, or better yet the house hockey blew up. But anyways as long as they play it where ever it may be I will watch it my friend. Keep up the good work G.W., I read your stuff on here all the time.

Considering I just watched a game on the NHL Network from 1991 played outside in 85 degree heat (Rangers vs Kings in Las Vegas), I'm going to guess that 17 years later the tecnology is there where they can make ice in 50 degree weather. I don't know about the rain but tempertures aren't going to be a problem.

Prices falling??? The NHL doesn't care about prices falling......that would just reduce scalper profit.....the actual game tickets have been sold out for weeks.

They knew the crazy weather they'd be running into when they planned the Winter Classic for Chicago. Our winters have become unpredictable. Obviously, the safety of the players comes first and foremost, but if that's taken care of, let the guys play!

That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard!...Hey Bettman!...Why don't you ask the players if they want to play in that weather?...I bet they all say "HELL YEAH!". :)

Weather forecast isn't much different in Detroit than Chicago. 60 degrees today, forecasted highs above freezing until Wednesday.
As far as the game goes, that's the chances you take when you try to rely on Mother Nature. I'm sure the Al Gore nuts will call it Global Warming.

Manbearpig strikes again! lol, after Al Gore got sick of losing the fight on banning Twisted Sister records, he's now trying to ban hockey fights, lol. Hockey can still be played outdoors in this global warming era. Go Wings!!!!! Hopefully a big fight breaks out and the Blackhawks get beaten so bad that their faces end up looking like Chicago style pizza.

On Christmas Eve the NHL Network aired the Ranger preseason game against the Kings in 1991 that took place in the parking lot of the MGM Grand in temperatures that were above 80 degrees. I think the folks in Chicago can handle 50 degrees if it comes to that ...

It's a nice thought to have a pond hockey game on some remote pond in eastern Ontario, or even at an outdoor football stadium in Edmonton, but the point of the game is to grow the sport and get people who don't talk hockey to talk about it. The Winter Classic, as of now, does that. Canadians are already talking hockey, and have been for the last 100+ years.
Here in the States, we need all the help we can get to grow the sport. The Winter Classic will continue to be played here, and will very likely continue to be between two American teams.
I hope they end up playing the game on New Year's Day.
