No. 1 star: Patrik Elias, New Jersey Devils
Patrik Elias has only, well, Patrik Elias to thank for tying a league record Thursday night. Elias scored his 15th career overtime goal, a regular-season mark he now shares with Mats Sundin and Jaromir Jagr. Elias would never have been in the position to score 2:46 into sudden death to beat the Philadelphia Flyers if he hadn't taken matters into his own hands late in regulation as well. Elias scored also at even-strength at 18:30 of the third period to tie the game 2-2. His late-game heroics enabled Elias to extend his current scoring streak to eight games (six goals and eight points for 14 points). A plus-2, Elias had seven shots on goal and two hits during 19:55 of ice time.

No. 2 star: Martin Hanzal, Phoenix Coyotes
He had never scored as many as two goals in a game, but Martin Hanzal went one better during a 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hanzal collected a hat trick by scoring three goals a night before his visiting parents were scheduled to return to the Czech Republic. The 21-year-old usually modest-scoring center doubled his season output in goals and moved to within two of last year's total of eight scored in 72 games. Hanzal scored two even-strength goals in the opening period and then capped his big night with a short-handed goal 27 seconds into the second period. Hanzal finished as a plus-3 with four shots and three hits during 17:40 of ice time.

No. 3 star: Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh captain pulled within two points of teammate Evgeni Malkin for the league lead in scoring as Sidney Crosby provided four assists during the Penguins' win over Carolina. All four of Crosby's helpers were primary assists, and they came on Pittsburgh's first four goals. Malkin has 41 points and Crosby 39 after 25 games.

Honorable mention: Panthers goalie Craig Anderson allowed only a power-play goal in the 46 shots he faced during a 2-1 win over the Sabres. … He hasn't done as much as projected as a high first-round pick, but David Legwand did set a Nashville record by appearing in a 574th career game. … Nicklas Lidstrom scored a goal and had two assists while skating a team-high 23:37 as the Red Wings beat the Canucks. … Maxim Lapierre had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick on Montreal hockey's 99th birthday celebrated with a 6-2 win over the Rangers. … With two more assists, Marc Savard increased his total to 14 helpers and 16 points in 10 games as the Bruins improved to 12-1-1 since the start of November with a road win. … Evgeni Nabokov stopped 29 of 31 shots as the Sharks improved to 14-0-1 at home. … Donald Brashear scored his first goal in 37 games and it counted as the game-winner as the Caps beat the Islanders.

Dishonorable mention: Buffalo has lost eight of its last 10 games, and a big reason is the Sabres have produced only 19 goals in that time. … Flyers' goalie Martin Biron has allowed three or more goals in six straight games. … The Hurricanes have scored two or fewer goals in 12 of their last 13 games.

How about honorable mentions for Patrick Marleau (franchise record for PP goals, 76) and Joe Thornton (most consecutive games by a Shark, 248, along with the winning goal)?

Honorable mention to David Krejci for his shorthanded-curl-and-drag-then-five-hole go ahead goal.
It was pretty ugly and against Tampa, but honorable mention nonetheless.

So... hands up if you expected Kyle Wellwood to be on pace for a 40-goal season in early December after scoring 31 goals through his first 189 career games. His 11 goals over 21 games in the Canucks' opening 26 pro-rate to 40 in 77 games... and his 3 assists pro-rate to 11, after putting up 77 assists previous to this season. This guy somehow went from a pure set-up man with not much of a nose for the net to a natural scorer with no passing touch overnight. Friggin' weird.
Also, fun fact... he hasn't taken a penalty since April 11, 2006. That's 31 months ago! Man.

Ok, my turn for "wysh, you forgot about my team's guy for star nominations..."
But rookie Matt D'Agostini got a nice assist and his second NHL goal off a wicked wrist shot last night, against the mighty Rangers. He's playing well enough right now to make habitually-underachieving Guillaume Latendresse a contender to be this year's Michael "bench" Ryder.

Honorable mention should go to Michael Leighton of the Hurricanes for allowing Pittsburgh to score pretty much at will. The Canes continue to play with crappy goaltending for the third consecutive season. Any wonders why this team hasn't made the playoffs since winning it all?

How about a dishonorable to the non-existant Detroit D. My "homeboys" can't seem to defend...and Ozzie can't seem to keep a puck out of a 5-gallon bucket...much less a friggin net...

@Andrew V - and you wonder why Michael Leighton has played on 90% of the NHL teams over the last few years - he couldn't even crack most ECHL teams...
It's also about time that the Flyers put Nitty in more - Biron's only chance of getting a win is Philly scores 4+ goals a game. I watched the game yesterday, and Biron let in 2 softies, especially the one in OT. If Philly can't beat the Devils when they have Clemmenson in net, they are in a world of hurt when Brodeur is back...

@15- well i imagine if I was a goalie I would find it much easier to keep the puck out of a 5 gallon bucket than out of a net... I believe that's what #13 was refering to.

Well, it seems as if the Panthers have found their Goalie Of The Future. Their "defense" forces their goalies to face 35+ shots a game. Luckily for them, they now have a kid that can handle that sorta workload since the Canucks stole Luongo...

Biron is rightfully in the Dishonorable section, but I'd say his biggest problem isn't his GAA. The problem is someody (goalie coach maybe) really needs to either teach him how to play the puck or glue his skates to the crease because he looks attrocious when he comes out of the net. Would have been a 2-1 win last night if he hadn't floundered out of the net and turned the puck over with 1:30 to play. And I counted at least 3 times on Tuesday when he had to bail himself out after poor play outside of the crease. The Flyers are lucky to have gotten 3 points this week what with his shennanigans.

    @B-Nardz:
The game before, Osgood allowed one goal against the ducks but except for that, he sucks this season (along with the [profane] defense, who deserve and dishonorable mention). Hell, Craig Anderson receives atleast 40 shots and can do better than Osgood.
