No. 1 star: Henrik Lundqvist(notes), New York Rangers

The Rangers netminder was under assault from the Los Angeles Kings in the third period of New York's 4-2 win. Los Angeles outshot the Rangers 10-1 in the final frame, but New York managed to hold on for the two points. Lundqvist made 34 saves including this beauty on Teddy Purcell(notes) in the first period for his fifth win of the season.

No. 2 star: Corey Perry(notes), Anaheim Ducks

Perry set the tone early in Anaheim's 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. His two goals in the first eight minutes of the game gave him seven points in his first six games for the Ducks in '09-10.

No. 3 star: Vinny Prospal, New York Rangers

Prospal was an integral part in the Rangers win, scoring two power-play goals in the first period, his 200th and 201st in the NHL as New York extended their winning streak to six games. Prospal would add an assist in the third period on a Marian Gaborik(notes) goal .

Honorable Mention: Marian Gaborik scored his sixth goal of the season for the Rangers and has now beaten goalies in five of New York's seven games so far this season ... Rookie Michael Del Zotto(notes) assisted on two goals and continues to impress on the Rangers blue line ...  The Dallas Stars made fantasy owners happy in their 6-0 win over the Nashville Predators. Loui Eriksson(notes) potted two goals and assisted on another, Brendan Morrow scored twice, while Brad Richards(notes) added a goal and two assists. Youngsters James Neal(notes) (three assists) and Jamie Benn(notes) (two assists) were involved in much of the Stars scoring ... Marty Turco(notes) recorded his 37th career shutout ... Eric Belanger(notes) scored a goal and assisted on a late tally as the Wild fell to Anaheim .. Nikolai Khabibulin's(notes) 35 saves against his former team weren't enough as Edmonton fell to Chicago 4-3  ... I predicted Pittsburgh's Chris Kunitz(notes) would score a goal tonight to break his slump. Well, shootout goals may not count in the totals, but he did beat Cam Ward(notes) for the shootout winner tonight in Carolina ... Evgeni Malkin(notes) continues to dominate the Hurricanes scoring a goal and adding an assist tonight ... Down 2-0 to the Penguins, Ray Whitney(notes) led the charge back with two third period goals for the Hurricanes. Whitney now has a three game point streak for the 'Canes ... Ward made 36 saves in defeat, with one coming on Bill Guerin(notes) that could be considered highway robbery:

Did You Know?: The New York Rangers are 12-1 in their last 13 home games? (AP)

Dishonorable Mention: Dan Ellis(notes) was not long for duty tonight after allowing three goals on the first three shots he faced against Dallas. His replacement, Pekka Rinne(notes), ended up making 20 saves in relief, but allowing three goals as well ... All four of Minnesota's losses have come on the road ... Chicago's Patrick Sharp(notes) missed a penalty shot in the second period and is now 0-for-3 in his career ... Los Angeles' power-play was 1-for-7 against the Rangers ...  Kris Letang(notes) is having a rough week. First, he gets his finger chomped on by Philadelphia's Scott Hartnell(notes), then he gets rocked by Carolina's Tuomo Ruutu(notes):

Boy, the Avery luck is back in New York!
Sigh, the Preds will do well! Just as long as Trotz doesn't put in Ellis. Rinne is their starter to be!
Scott Hartnell is too cool with the fro. =)

Wow. That was some save by Cam. Too bad his team couldn't get him a win.

That save by Ward was awesome!
I can't believe Guerin didn't bury it. According to Dutch, Billy's good for about 35 goals this year ;)
Good to see Kunitz get a shootout goal. Lord knows the guy is utterly incapable of scoring during regular time.
Runnin' up on ya has got to be thrilled with the Rangers season so far...Bobby Ryan, not so much.

To go along with Sharp being 0 for 3 in penalty shots, the Blackhawks haven't scored on a penalty shot at the United Center/Chicago Stadium in 22 years.

Hey Rangers, the money you saved with the Scott Gomez trade got you Marion Gaborik....Maybe you would like to unload Redden and Roszival on us too....Oops, sorry, we seem to be in salary cap hell for the next several years...

All of a sudden the Rangers can score goals... all of a sudden we have the best record in the NHL...
I'll reserve further gloating until January.

Henrik was great tonight, as he usually is. The PP scored twice, which is a big key to the Rangers nowadays, if they continue to score PP goals, they can be dangerous.
The worst things about Redden and Roszival are their salaries, not their play per se. Gilroy had a good game defensively. Del Zotto is being used a bit less per game than the other D, which is good I think, to sort of let him get a grip on the NHL. Gaborik has been fantastic as has been Prospal. Dubinsky is a strong presence too. No Championship was ever won in October, but so far so good. They were outplayed tonight but their talent and their goaltender got them a win and every 2 points counts.

I'm not sure what it is, but I only go to 2 or 3 Hawks games a year, and I have witnessed all three of Sharp's penalty shot attempts in his career. One was against Boston that could have won the game in OT, but he missed. The second was against Vancouver in the "Burrows yanking Keith's hair" game, and then tonight. Those are also the last three games I've been to. Not sure what it is, but something about me being in the building is causing Sharp to get penalty shots, but miss them.

Technically Rags fans, the Pens are in first because of the tie breaker. Pens are winning the season series. So go back to 4th place

big rich, i hate to put a fellow pens fan on the spot, but you are incorrect in your theory of the penguins having the tie break advantage, even though they beat the rags on opening night.
since they have only played one game, and it was a home game for the penguins, the points in the head to head matchup do not count in a tiebreak.
In the event teams are tied in the standings, the following tiebreakers are applied to determine which team receives the higher seeding.
    1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
    2. The greater number of games won.
    3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
    4. Goal differential
with that said, who gives a sh*t right now? remember how the rangers started last season? christ, we're 7 games into the season. they're both playing pretty good hockey, but sh*t can hit the fan at any moment and for long periods of time (see 2008-09 penguins december-february)
i have noticed something this year. there seems to be a lot more intensity early on in the season than the last few years. it may just be another instance of teams running right out of the gate and will fall back in due time, but the action and passion that we've seen the first 3 weeks has been amazing league wide. one more reason why hockey is the best sport in the world. fast paced action on a nightly basis for almost 3/4 of the year.
learn it. live it. love it.

I'm in love with the Pens right now. Fleury is playing superbly and has stated that he feels a lot more confident in his abilities. He doesn't seem phased when he lets in a goal, and simply stands back up and plays his game again. Having the entire team contributing and playing hard is a beautiful thing to see as well. Crosby can finish twentieth in league scoring for all I care, as long as we keep winning. The Pens are playing like champions.
Good on the Rags so far, too. They have looked formidable and their offense has been clicking. Gaborik has been an unreal presence. Fingers crossed that he manages to stay healthy for Rags fans.

Was at the Rangers game last night and the Kings outplayed the Rangers the whole night but Lundqvist was amazing. Kings are so quick to the puck. If they play like this all season they will be a playoff team. Alot of talent up front. Good luck to them. Seemed like only a few Rangers showed up last night. Vinny Prospal is my new favorite Ranger next to Gaborik. The guy does all the little things, can score and is fiesty. Great signing Glen. Can't believe I just said that.

Yeah, Sharp missed the penalty shot but he also scored a goal, an assist, +1 rating, and racked up 5 shots. Hardly a dishonorable mention.

Actually I was sitting in section 118 so I was pretty close and even the Rangers players and Torts said that LA was the much better team. King Henrik stole the game from LA. So I think I did watch the game. Did you?

Corey Perry...second star on the night...Montreal could sure use a power forward like that, but wait, Bob Gainey chose to pass on him in the 2003 draft!! While other teams build their young talent, we sit around and pick up other teams scraps..you got your bones, now beg for more!!

Potvinsux is dead on.... NY NIGHTMARE mustve watched a different game than I.
The Rangers 'outplayed' the Kings for the majority of the 1st period and maybe for a minute or two in the 2nd and 3rd. Other than that... LA was the better team.
