Puck Daddy - NHL

Two relationships ended for hockey super-pest Sean Avery at the start of this summer; although, for once, neither of them involved a sexy starlet.

The first finale was his internship at Vogue magazine, which culminated with a memorable turn as guest editor for MensVogue.com. As editor, Avery compiled a countdown of the worst uniforms in sports history. He even showed off his mad blogging skills, writing about the best sushi place in New York City and where to get your hair cut while listening to Jay-Z.

But Avery must bid those NYC haunts adieu after a second relationship ended yesterday: The one between the NHL forward and the New York Rangers, as Avery left Broadway and signed a four-year, $15.5 million free-agent contract with the Dallas Stars.

We've had our fun with Avery here on Puck Daddy, but mostly we think he's a dynamic personality who is unfairly targeted by NHL suits because he has the nerve to do what so many others fail to do, which is to make hockey interesting. There's just something intriguing about a guy who trades punches with another man on the ice who then turns around to offer fashion advice to Hollywood actresses. "I like to push it to the edge, that's how I play and that's how I live," Avery told the Dallas Morning News.

As a player, Avery is someone Dallas GM Brett Hull said will do "whatever it takes to win," and we've got an example of that here: From MensVogue.com, it's a look at the grueling off-season workouts Avery put in every morning before his internship. Of course, this being Sean Avery, there's also trash talk about fighting Darcy Tucker, too. Enjoy:

The Rangers are stupid for letting Avery go, he's all about the team which is more than you can say about most players these days.

Which team? Detroit, LA, New York, or his latest stop Dallas? The first three have done the right thing, let him go. Now it's Dallas turn in the barrel. Next stop?

That was almost as grueling as 5 seconds of Coy Wire's workouts.

He's worth different amounts to different teams. Obviously, Dallas thought he was worth $15 million for four years. Glen Sather knows what he's doing. He was my favorite Ranger, and the team will definitely miss him, but it's not as if he's gotten us to the Cup finals. I wish him well in Dallas, but he'll have his hands full in the West.
Interesting look at his workout. Lot of plyometric stuff. May have to incorporate some of those into my workouts...or the hip thrusts into my Saturday nights.
    GO RANGERS!

Glen Sather makes me SICK. How he can let a dynamic player like Avery slip away baffles my mind. This guy brought something that has been sorely missing from Rangers Hockey...passion. Now the Rangers are loading up on Russians and Swedes because they think speed wins championships. They will unfortunately find out the hard way that you need more gritty, physical, North American-style hockey to go deep into the playoffs after a grueling 82 game season. The kind of hockey Sean Avery plays.
We'll miss you Sean...for the record, I think Sather is a hypocrite not giving Avery $4 million/year, then giving Roszival $5M, and Redden $6.5M per. IDIOT!

I bumped into Avery here in NYC (Lafayette & Great Jones St.) on Wednesday, the day he signed with Dallas. I said as Rangers fans we though he was a perfect fit for NYC and that I sucks he's gone. I shook his hand and said, "Good luck in Dallas, bro."

avery is a good player but he hasnt brought a cup to any team he plays before. in the playoffs good teams dont fall for his bait and he ends up hurting the team. he is going to a real good team in dallas so lets see how far they go. he is a good guy off the ice i must say having run into him several times when he was with the Kings.

his style of play and his size does not merit a 4 year contract, he'll be hurt and out of the lineup
for most of those 4 years. but he does bring excitement where ever he goes! good luck in dallas!
