While our friends were all playing "Bases Loaded" and "RBI Baseball" for the NES, we were addicted to a baseball video game called "Baseball Stars," which captured the basic fun of the sport while injecting it with some absurd touches that could only spring from the minds of Japanese programmers. Like teams named the Ninja BlackSox and the Ghastly Monsters. Like the fact that you could build a franchise of entirely female players by answering the question "What is a wren?" in "create a team" mode.
While we continue to debate the virtues of "NHL 2K9" and "EA Sports NHL 09," we've come across a video game that tosses realism out the window and resets hockey in an apocalyptic junkyard filled with violent thugs and scantily clad Anime babes. (Which only sounds like a fever dream Bob Probert had one time.)
Strangeness, thy name is "Slapshot Underground." Here's a teaser:
As far as we can tell, this is some kind of online multi-player hockey game created by Nexon Korea; although it was difficult to learn anything from a Web site in Korean that has such a fetching young lass featured so prominently. If that's what the players wear, what do the Ice Girls wear? (Assuming you need Ice Girls on concrete. Someone has to shoot the T-shirts into the stands with an air cannon, right?)
We asked our buddy Bill Barnwell from IGN if he had any context to add. "I have absolutely no idea, but I feel like my brain is going to explode after watching it" he said. "It looks like some kind of hockey MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game, for the egg-head impaired) heavily influenced by Mutant League Hockey."
Another, longer trailer follows below. It features more game play, some characters and a few fantastically awkward translations. "Goalie: Fortified like a big rock!" "Make your own victory drama!" Awesome.

I'd go as far as to say best baseball game of all-time, and it's even in contention for best sports game.

The umlaut is a nice touch, though.
