Whether or not you believe Semyon Varlamov(notes) can be a franchise goaltender for the Colorado Avalanche, there's no denying his athleticism.
Here's Varly in the Burgundy/White intra-squad scrimmage at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on Tuesday night, robbing star Matt Duchene(notes) on the final shootout attempt of the evening:
Quite a dangle, and quite a save. Maybe not a "we traded an unprotected lottery pick for this guy"-level save, but still a dandy.
Here's Adrian Dater on the goalie's performance in the scrimmage:
Semyon Varlamov looked good. He stopped 14-of-15 shots, including a couple of point-blank chances. One was on a breakaway by Mueller. He gave up only one goal — a shot through the 5-hole by Brad Malone(notes) on a breakaway. Not his fault.
Stopping Duchene in the shootout is no small feat. Please recall last preseason's Burgundy/White scrimmage when Duchene did some owning of his own against Trevor Cann(notes) (the same game in which Duchene stood up to Adam Foote of all people):
Where do you have the Avs this season?
Playoff team? Playoff bubble? Chatted with a few people during our travels in Toronto who thought they were candidates for Worst in the West, but I don't see it.
