Puck Daddy - NHL

The terms "stretcher" and "Darcy Tucker" probably aren't mutually exclusive in the minds of most hockey fans; only this time it was the Colorado Avalanche winger who was the victim of a cheap shot that left him immobile on the ice in a scary incident Friday night.

At 5:26 of the second period in Colorado, Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu(notes) delivered a check with Tucker's numbers facing him and Tucker's face in front of the glass, having already released the puck. The result? Tucker's body flopped to the ice, the crowd gasped in unison and the drama began:

As Tucker was removed from the ice on a backboard by medical personnel, Ruutu received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. Milan Hejduk(notes) scored on the ensuing power play to break a 2-2 tie, and Wojtek Wolski(notes) scored 14 seconds after the man advantage ended to help power the Avalanche to an emotional 5-4 victory, their seventh in 10 games.

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reported that Tucker was "knocked out cold on the hit. But he regained consciousness and is now fully alert." NHL Network reported after the game that Tucker went to a local hospital where X-Rays were negative but a concussion was diagnosed.

Reaction to the hit, from NHL.com:

"The League will take care of it," said Carolina coach Paul Maurice, who coached Tucker in Toronto. "I'm a huge Darcy Tucker(notes) supporter, so I hope he's OK."

[...]

"Ruutu's got a history," said Foote, the Avs' captain. "He hits late, he hits from behind. So I felt like it was probably dirty if your guy is laying there."

Ruutu's getting a suspension here, no doubt. It was a scary scene that resulted from a completely irresponsible play, and even his coach is hinting at further punishmen. Now it's just a matter of duration: Both Ruutu's time away from the rink and the amount of time Tucker needs to get back on it.

Dirty hit, no question, he had time to pull up. Canes coaches saying it's part of the game, bull, this kind of hit shouldn't be part of the game. I lost a lot of respect for Ruutu, and I was a big fan of his. Walker last year, today's hit, what a bunch of losers.

Sounds like Maurice was pretty sickened by the hit. That was dirty, I like Ruutu's game, but there's no place for hits like that. Tucker doesn't heal well, either.

This kind of reminds me of the Tie Domi knockout of Ulf Samuelsson...karma.

Wait...Tucker's career has been based on throwing extremely questionable hits...now they're saying he can't take what he dishes out? As much as I hate Ruutu, I'd say this is this punk's comeuppance for a plethora of head shots.

    Tucker has two right arms?
That hit was dirty. What do you expect from a Ruutu? (well, not Christian Ruutu)
Typical, wouldn't fight Foote either, just turtled and waited for help.
While I certainly hope Darcy is okay, Mike Peca is probably less concerned...

I think what's scariest here is Tucker having two right arms.

I don't see why this hit is so terrible. It looks like a routine hockey hit, where Ruutu rubbed him out along the boards...Tucker turned his back at the moment Ruutu hit him...it happens so quickly...but Ruutu's have a reputation, don't they?

People are so classless. I don't care what your opinion of a player is... when they are laying in a pool of their own blood, then there should be some respect given to the guy. You can continue to hate him, but don't ever say it was deserved. No one deserves to lay in their blood while somewhere their family watches in horror somewhere. Grow up.

I'm sorry but I don't see how this is a dirty hit. Ruutu checked him just has Tucker finished playing the puck. He didn't hit him with his elbow, nor did he go for his head in any way or leave his feet. The only thing I will agree on is that it was a hit from behind but I have to admit I have seen plays like that before; in this instance Tucker was in between watching to be sure his pass went to a teammate and turning around to continue play in the offensive zone.
It's more of an unlucky hit than anything else...

Head up Tuck? His head was up and he wasn't facing Ruutu, he was hit from behind. VooDoo you're a douche.

He hit him in the back close enough to the boards where it doesn't usually do much damage, but the fact is it did do a ton of damage so he will be suspended no doubt, probably 5 games. He might get an extra game or two for being a Ruutu as the league wheel of suspensions dictates.

Did you even watch the video? Tucker's back was to him the entire time.
Dirty hit. 6-10 game suspension. Ovie will do the same thing middle of next week and receive a fine.

I've no love loss for Darcy Tucker, quite the opposite actually, but that was an unacceptable play by Ruutu. Period.

As much as I dislike Tucker's game I hope he is OK. It was obvious he invited this hit. He knew Ruutu was there, turned his back and then didnt get his hands up. Don't forget that Tucker lives on the edge with his head hunting, after whistle hits, and stick work while always playing the victim. He always seems to take the worst of every exchange!

Fine him heavily, suspend him for a long time and let Footer or Cody clean his clock. While facing him. Something Ruutu isn't used to facing someone, he may not know how to fight while seeing someones face. Too bad he is on an otherwise decent Carolina team.
