Puck Daddy - NHL

Tonight against the Buffalo Sabres, it wasn't just how Alexander Ovechkin scored his latest instant classic goal but when he scored it for the Washington Capitals.

At 2-1 in the third period and with the Sabres stealing the momentum, Ovechkin took the puck in the defensive zone, motored past two Buffalo players and then undressed Henrik Tallinder -- all before sliding the puck and himself past goalie Patrick Lalime for what would be the game-winning goal.

Check out the video:

"I was tired and I just fell, and I shoot," Ovechkin said after the game. "It was in, so that's pretty cool ... You always want to do some crazy things."

When asked how this tally ranks with some of his other classics, he said "I don't know. I don't know. I mean, Top 20?" Scary part is, he might have 19 others that could give it a challenge.

Washington Coach Bruce Boudreau said there are certain games when Ovechkin is clearly "on" and the potential for a goal like this exists, but that tonight's game against Buffalo wasn't necessarily one of those times; at least at first.

"This was a determination goal," said Boudreau. "He got it, made a move, they were checking him, he was losing the puck. He was just determined; like, 'they took one away from me, and they're not taking another away from me.'"

Boudreau was referencing a goal wiped away on a goalie interference call. "Once he scored the goal that was called back, he turned it up again. He was mad, and he was going to make up for it," said Boudreau.

The Capitals are now 14-1-1 when Ovechkin scores a goal this season. And that's why they chant "M-V-P" for the guy in D.C.

I was there, It was pretty incredible. I've seen him get so close on oppurtunities like this before and while it was happening it seemed like time slowed for a second. Then it went in and the crowd went nuts. One of the best goals I've ever witnessed live.

Man, is Ovie fun to watch. Very nice goal but also a comedy of errors on Buffalo's part.

There is a clip on youtube that shows the true brilliance of it. It shows the view from behind the net so you can see the first deke in the the caps own end, him blowing by the first defender who is whacking him the entire way and then him undressing the last defender while then falling, shooting and scoring all in the same motion. I was there, it was wild and the crowd at VC has never been so loud except for maybe when he picked off the pass to score the GWG in game one last year.

that 1st pic is hilarious...if u didnt read this u would think the buffalo d-man was regaining possession of the puck from ovechkin where in reality he's in shock b/c he knows alex is about to pull off a highlight move and when he does he freezes up instead of hiting the puck away and Lalime...wow he's garbage

WHAT A GOAL!! what a game!! Man I wish he were for sale Buffalo needs to get one more offensive powerhouse. Lalime looked completely confused (almost rookie-ish) but he's a pretty decent back up net minder. Ovey is impressive! I really wish he were 4-sale!

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooof. Mom's Tallinder and Lalime just changed their names and applied for a late term abortions. If that fails they are flying them to Nebraska to be left at a hospital to be adopted.
    Man Ovechkin is scary talented.
Wyshynski since its Alex............... maybe Tallinder and Lalime dont stink. Maybe.

The NHL and Bettman should be promoting Ovechkin, not that kid in Pittsburg. Ovechkin is the total package!

Ovechkin is the best in the game.. and billiejoefreak, number 15, yaeh.. sure... Miller would've stopped Ovie. Doubt it.... there isn't a goalie alive that wants Ovechkin bearing down on him with the puck

First Tavares had his goal, and now Ovie has one right up there with his spinning on his back goal. Incredible talents out there right now. Ovechkin is incredible, can't wait for Maxim to join him (who made his own audition goal at the end of the game).

Wysh is a NJD/Brodeur lover....if it's his favorite CURRENT NHL'er...former would have to be the great Andre "Red Light" Racicot (pronounced RASS-ih-kohw).

I was at the game, and that goal was more of a showcase of strength, than it was skill or speed. Incredible.

My wife and I went out for dinner and drinks last night with friends. At the bar and we were watching the game. My buddies wife doesn't watch hockey, and was asking my wife and I about the game, rules, and Caps. She asked who, "Oh-va-chicken" was, and we explained that Ovechkin is arguably the best player in the NHL right now, and going to the games are amazing because of him. Not more than 2 minutes later does he pull off this play, and even she was impressed.
Looks like we have another couple of friends interested in going to games with us now. THAT is why Ovy is great for the league!!!

Ovechkin is the 2nd biggest floater in the NHL right now, just trailing his buddy Alexandra Semin. You don't win in the playoffs when you cherry pick and hang out at the blueline all game and shoot from anywhere. The Crapitals will never win when it counts (playoffs) with players like him. Look for the Craps to be one and done come April once again.

Ovechkin is purhaps one the the all time favorite reel maker in the game. He plays with a passion for hockey not what it brings him but the entertainment it brings the fan. I am A Maple Leafs fan but never fail to watch Ovechkin play and probly the only time I cheer for another player when the Caps play the Leafs
