UPDATE: Reaction to the Ovechkin goal celebration has been all over the map today, especially from Capitals fans that were less than thrilled with the display.

Faced with recent criticism about his boundless enthusiasm by both Canadian blowhard Don Cherry and arch rival Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Alexander Ovechkin did the punk rock thing tonight and celebrated his 50th goal with the theatrics of an NFL touchdown celebration.

Ovechkin's first-period goal in Tampa Bay gave him the third 50-goal season of his young career; and to celebrate, he dropped his stick to the ice and treated it like it was made of lava:

Check out the YouTube footage of TSN's coverage, which includes some Ovechkin reaction. Ovechkin said after the game that Washington Capitals goalie Jose Theodore suggested the routine. Was it another great moment in prop comedy from the reigning MVP, or an insult to sportsmanship?

That's the question tonight, as coaches from the Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning, who lost the game 5-2, expressed concerns over Ovechkin's exuberance. From Capitals Insider:

When I asked him if he expected to be ripped by Don Cherry, he shot back with a big smile: "Oh yeah, he's going to be [ticked] off for sure. I love it. I can't wait 'til he says something about me. Old coaches, old system, you know?"

Not everyone was laughing, though. Caps Coach Bruce Boudreau said he was caught off guard by the celebration and plans to talk to his star about it. Bolts Coach Rick Tocchet was upset, telling reporters: "I grew up in the old days in the Spectrum where in the first period, after that happened, it might have been a three-hour first period. It's not something I like. It's hard for me to see that in our building."

Tocchet also told the AP: "I think he’s a terrific player. He went down a notch in my books after that." Bet he did.

The 700 Level has another look at the goal, and writes: "No word on whether the NHL will be implementing celebration penalties, but Ovie's definitely testing the idea here."

As we've said before: If Ovechkin's enthusiasm crosses the line of honorability, that's something he'll pay the price for eventually on the ice.

A premeditated celebration like this one crosses the line -- seriously, if the NHL wanted forced celebrations made for SportsCenter, it would have signed T.O. But Ovechkin's a big boy and understands the media firestorm and potential retribution (Tampa's in Washington next week) coming his way.

There's something to be said for hockey players finally exhibiting an honest-to-god personality and sense of showmanship like Ovechkin does.

But there's also something said for holding off on the whole "hot stick" dance stuff until you've won, say, a playoff round in your otherwise remarkable regular season career.

Wait to you see what he has planned for goals 60, and 70! (70 may have to wait until next year)

I love AO, but the only stick that's gonna be on fire is his putter if the Craps don't start beating teams that aren't the Lightning.

"Potential retribution"? Ovy's 50th was in the _1st_ period, yes? The Bolts had over 50 minutes of ice time to exact their "retribution" - I saw nothing that looked remotely like it (and it's not like they had anything _else_ to play for).
Tocchet? All mouth and no team. -JW

Im a very big capitals fan, have been for my entire life and I was very disappointed when i saw what he was doing. There are other things to consider of course though, it was his 50th goal, the only capitals player to have three 50 goal seasons, and if im not mistaken the only other active player to have done the feat is selanne. so if its once or a couple times when big goals/games happen then ok but do it again after the next goal i will be terribly disappointed and disgusted.

If I'm Tocchet, I bag skate every one of his players tomorrow for not trying to smear Ovechkin into the glass for the rest of the game, especially that candyass standing behind Ovechkin while he plays his "hot stick" game. Skate past and hook a skate out from under him, at least.

Jason, you do not know anything about the caps, Your boneheaded comment has just cemented this, you are no longer allowed an opinion.
Go look at a schedule and see the caps have beaten boston, detriot, Philly, NJ, and the penguins. Some on more than one occasion.

firewing: It's always been a big deal. The fact that some people are starting to take notice now, doesn't mean that a whole lot of others didn't make an issue of it before. It's a classless and garbage league move and a move that is the type that will cost him in the future, one way or another. You can bet your ass that if Sean Avery did a move like this, people would be calling for his head. His OWN freaking coach said it was over the line, what else needs to be said?
The NHL doesn't need its own Russian version of TO, I don't care what the OV bunnies say.

If i was a Bolt and I saw him do that, he would have gotten the same treatment T.O. got when he celebrated in the Star in Cowboy Stadium, full body check, take the penalty with pride.

JWJr : Well, the way the league is right now, it's a lot harder for players to take care of business like they used to in the old days, even 10-15 years ago. The fact that OV is one of the league's biggest stars right now, compounded with the fact that the league is still trying to improve its both its fan-base and its image, makes it that much more difficult to seek substantive retribution.
I tell you what though, if there is a coach that will consider doing something about it, Tocchet is certainly near or at the top of the list, if Coach Tocchet is anywhere near being like the player Tocchet was. Time will tell.

bc i will take your word for it. if you say its always been a big deal. i just have never seen anyone other then cherry say anything bad about him. i grant you being in detroit i may not hear all the washington stuff. the only thing i ever hear bad about him is he leaves his feet to hit players. but you have to admit if don cherry dislikes him it makes a case for other people to like him. a good point is why didnt some lightning players at least try to make him pay for it. seems to me there is a lack of crosby punching bags going in the tampabay area.

BC, are you talking about cheap shots? About hitting a player with intent to injure? Because I'm sure that'll be looked down on a lot harsher then a fun little celebration like the one Ovie did after his goal. Get a clue.

It's ok to be happy and celebrate with your team after you score a goal, that's a tradition in hockey. The point people are trying to make is that there's a fine line between sportsmanship and disrespect. I know I'd be p'd off if I saw Ovechkin celebrating like that while I was on the ice for his goal. Bottom line is guys like Jagr, Lemieux, Gretzky, Yzerman, etc., are and will always be better than Ovechkin. Players like the ones I listed in my last sentence got respect because they showed sportsmanship and didn't need to make a celebration into a full-fledged party after they scored a goal. The NHL doesn't need mime acts after a goal is scored.
