Puck Daddy - NHL

Say hello to a glass-shattering highlight you'll be seeing for the duration of your hockey fandom:

After the third or fourth viewing of the slow-motion replay of this Milan Lucic check, you actually see a large piece of the glass smack Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn in the noggin. Perhaps the greatest argument for the necessity of helmets we've seen in quite a while.

The hit came 18 seconds into the second period tonight in Boston; what makes this play even more amazing is that Van Ryn scored the Leafs' first goal almost exactly six minutes later, sparking a rally of four unanswered goals for a 4-2 Toronto win over the Boston Bruins.

Hope those fans that got the shard shower are OK. Or at the very least that they didn't get glass shavings in their beer, what with the cost of a brew in Boston these days.

For the record, Lucic has now shattered as many panes of glass with his body as he has scored goals in 2008-09. Yes, he is on our fantasy. Yes, we are that bitter.

digg delicious

    AWESOME
Every person at NHL HQ should use this clip in EVERY promo.
However they will use the Staal brothers playing patty cake or Crosby saying something with all the excitement of Ben Stein.

Now if this was Columbus we would have to have cement bunkers installed for next season.

That MUST happen in every building, for every night, from no on.
Had someone died, they would make changes. But someone has to die first before the cost and effort will be worth it.

I hear you, Wysh. I also have him on my team (drafted him too early) and even had him benched when he scored one of his two goals so far.

I have to correct myself - I thought he had scored two already, which seemingly was wrong. So I really had him benched for all his goals this year. Nice.

i was surprised the glass broke like it did ....... isn't it supposed to be safety glass like they use for cars? Also if it was a puck that hit that pane there could have been more serious injury to fans
Remember this happened in USA, I can see the law suites already ......

    @ carl_vs_mastershake--

This wasn't even the best hit of the game. Dennis Wideman absolutely flattened a streaking Matt Stajan in the first period. But, this one was definetly cooler to watch.

Did they not start the 'implied risk' fctor at NHL games now?
IE sit by the gass it can break, your responsible for watchng for pucks coming out of the rink, ect?? Meaning no suit possible.
If i recall they settled the dead kid even though courts were ruling in the NHLs favor in early meetings.

this guy definitely left his feet. now you tell me how this is not worse than the hit hollweg landed a few games back??! lucic has to be suspended. if van ryn hadnt shifted his positioning in the last second, he would have ended up with a concussion or his throat sliced for sure. That glass is not like the kind that offered more give previously. it may end up being one of the most splayed clips of the year, but as long as van ryn and the fans who were cut are ok, at the end of the night all that matters is that the Leafs won.

    Yup lawsuit definitely!
In Canada the glass is plexi glass and takes A LOT to break, and when it does, it does not cut. Id sue! Friggin states! They should have safer glass than that!
