PITTSBURGH -- Didn't Gary Bettman teach us that there are no ties in hockey anymore?

That's how today's Winter Classic alumni game ended between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals with a 5-5 draw before a crowd of 10,000-plus at Heinz Field. The end result caused many in the stands to begin chanting "shootout" and, as an ode to "The Bad News Bears", "let them play!".

But while the result may have left some hoping for more, the opportunity for Penguins fans to see Mario Lemieux skate once again was more than enough to make them forget about a tie game.

Lemieux recorded two assists, including one on a Rob Brown goal which led to jokes about Brown finally getting his 50th goal that eluded him during the 1988-89 season.

After the game, Lemieux talked about his performance, Sidney Crosby's(notes) season and Crosby's and Ovechkin's impact on the NHL compare to he and Wayne Gretzky during their era:
