Raise your hand if you're a super hockey geek when it comes to the concept and execution of goaltender masks.
Everyone? OK then.
The NHL has released two geek-tastic videos that deal with the creation of Ilya Bryzgalov's and Bernie Parent's 2012 Winter Classic masks for the Philadelphia Flyers. Here's Franny Drummond of Drummond Custom Airbrush explaining Bryzgalov's celebration of Philadelphia sports icons:
Smokin' Joe Frasier, Dr. J, Michael Jack Schmidt, Bobby Clarke and Reggie White will be featured on Bryzgalov's mask. (Sorry, Philadelphia Soul.) Also, references to Gene Hart and Harry Kalas. Well done. It looks incredible.
What an amazing tribute to the history of Philadelphia sports. (What, no snowballs?) And seriously, how can you not love the marriage of the Philie Phanatic and Bryzgalov? That's huMANgous big.
Meanwhile, Bernie Parent's mask for the Winter Classic alumni game will feature a paint job that respects the classic design while adding a few flourishes:
Eh … it's going to be a great mask. But it's still messing with perfection.
