It's a presidential Election Day here in the United States; and while I'd be more interested in choosing the hottest "Ice Girl," it's quite the historic day with the nation on edge.

Earlier today, we published our own original hockey-themed political propaganda. But there's also a great tradition of hockey-related "attack ad" videos as well. Let's take a look back at some of the more recent and instant-classic video "campaign commercials."

"Vote for Rory" attack ad on Scott Niedermayer

Ah, yes, "Vote for Rory." The fan-backed, grassroots campaign that attempted to get journeyman defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick of the Vancouver Canucks voted into the 2007 All-Star Game in Dallas. Things ended with Fitzpatrick staying home for the All Star game and Slate trying to turn the shenanigans into "Watergate."

Joe Hockey

Joe Hockey is a Member for North Sydney, the Federal Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation and Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives in Australia. I don't know what all that means, but he's got a cool name.

A Pierreocratican

The Phoenix Coyotes introduced Pierre, the centerpiece of an award-winning marketing campaign, last season and he's been a hit. This season, he's been taken on Barack Obama and John McCain in his attempt for a Pierreocratican.

Vote Bruins

Apparently Dennis Leary was busy or something, so fellow Boston-based comedian Lenny Clarke fills in as the Bruins pimped Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard for last year's all-star game for the Boston Bruins.

Awkwardly kissing babies with Sergei Zubov

Back when Dallas Stars General Manager Brett Hull was the ambassador of fun (and seat filler on NBC's hockey broadcasts), he tried to get some of the hometown boys on the Western Conference All-Star roster when the event was in Dallas. Here's Sergei Zubov's campaign, complete with babies being awkwardly kissed and futile attempts at "Office Space" quotes.

Pittsburgh mascot attack ads

Finally, a rather detailed and funny campaign commercial spoof featuring Pittsburgh sports mascots The Pirate Parrot, IceBurgh of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Steely McBeam.

I think the words "Attack" and "Steely McBeam" go together like the words "Peanut Butter" and "Jelly"...
    ...Or "Sean Avery" and "Douchebag"...
    ...or "Wyshynski" and "You Stink!"

one bird is right ... we should demolish pnc park out of respect for the engineers that designed the place ... there is no reason for a minor league level team to have such a great place to play ...

KBBL Party Penguin, I'd add "Bettman" and "incompetent" to that list.

Nice collection Wysh! Good to see that at least the Yotes ad campaign is getting some attention, even if the team isn't!
