Puck Daddy - NHL

With the NHL announcing it's plans for All-Star Weekend, one of the "highlights" (if you want to go that far) was the trick shot competition where Alexander Ovechkin was the only player to, you know, pull some trickery and have fun with the event.

If the League is looking for one of its contestants, then someone should get Philadelphia Flyers prospect James vanRiemsdyk on the phone.

During the fifth place game at the World Junior Championships on Sunday, Team USA beat the Czech Republic 4-3 3-2 in overtime, thanks to vanRiemsdyk's nifty goal.

I would imagine that since it was a consolation game in the tournament and not a medal game, USA coach Ron Rolston wasn't pulling vanRiemsdyk aside to tell him to calm down the hot-dogging.

Despite another disappointing finish in the tournament for Team USA, and a tough loss to Team Canada during round robin play, vanRiemsdyk gave the Americans at least one memory to take away.

I think Briere pulled his groin again just watching that video. Definitely a move you won't see him trying any time soon.

Siiick, but, too bad it's relatively meaningless. Petr Forsberg's move is legendary, because he won the gold with that move.

Somebody should show Crosby this video and let him know that is how you work the trick bag...

As much as the players probably practice something like that, I wouldn't necessarily call it hot dogging. He got the goalie moving then used his skill to put it where he wasn't.

When you try a move like that and fail, people may call it "hot-dogging". When you succeed, they call it genius. That was genius.

Nice goal and stop whining about USA's (lack of) success... try to root for Finland. I figured out about 10 years ago that they'll do nothing but disappoint and I'm not even 20 yet.

Wow! That goal was sick indeed!
Just a note; I think USA won that game with 3-2 in OT, and not 4-3.

Hopefully the Flyers will give him a shot soon. The Flyers will be contenders for years to come with drafting like that

@wht16 - The Flyers wanted him this season, but he rather have male anatomy drawn on his face in New Hampshire. Paul Holmgren is not too happy with this guy - I'll bet the Flyers trade him before we see him play a regular season game...

Ryan H .... that pic wasn't of JVR ... it was some other hockey player. Holmgren is fine with him. They knew he was going to college for 2 years. JVR did exactly what he told the Flyers brass when they drafted him. He made a commitment and stayed with it, which is something commendable. He'll be in Orange and Black next year (or with the Phantoms ... like Giroux).

    @ Ryan H.
JVR wanted to take more time to develop at the college level rather than get minimal minutes in the NHL... He is expected to join the team next year. I haven't heard or read any reports that would lead one to believe Holmgren is upset with Van Riemsdyk

why doesn't the nhl allow other players into the skills competition? like the nba with the slam dunk competition and three point competitions? it makes no sense to me. erik cole should be in the fastest skater competition for instance and players like Robbie Schremp (if he'd played a few more games this year) should be in the "highlight" competition. i think it would bring a little more jazz to the events of the day.

Funny that an American displaying sick skill is mocked.
If that had been Tavares we'd be seeing it for years, just like Forsberg's shootout goal years back.
If Van Reemer isn't wanted in Philly they should send him to LA, but of course that's just Flyers-west.
