Philadelphia captain Mike Richards(notes) appeared to have beaten Sharks goalie (and former Flyer) Antero Niittymaki(notes) in the final moments of overtime, sending the home crowd into hysterics. The Sharks? They didn't leave their bench, believing that time may have expired. And with that, it went to video review:
"It stings, yeah," Richards said of the loss. "But it's easily correctable. Stay out of the penalty box. It's easy to do. We shoot ourselves in the foot every game. It almost seems we take it for granted that we're up.
"Then we slow down and have to take penalties because we're out of position and not moving our feet. It's something we're going to have to [correct] as the season moves on. It's frustrating, being up with the lead in your building. It should be automatic."
Richards thought he won the game at the buzzer with his long shot inside the blue line. "I wanted to wait until Danny got there and obviously, I waited too long," Richards said, admitting he didn't know exactly how much time was left.
We're guessing he doesn't wait next time.
