Puck Daddy - NHL

The television graveyard is dotted with tombstones from cancelled ESPN Original Programs; some deserved ("Quite Frankly") and others unfortunate (many a hazy evening at Puck Daddy HQ was spent watching "Cheap Seats," the sports world response to "MST3K").

"Teammates" was one of those short-lived ESPN game shows that was probably ahead of its time: A revamp of "The Newlywed Game" that had players like Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson answering questions to see how well they really knew each other. Aired during Summer 2005, it was rather funny; maybe viewers just couldn't handle Stuart Scott playing the Bob Eubanks role.

The clip below is from an episode featuring some sports stars from Detroit: The Pistons' Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton, and the Detroit Red Wings' Darren McCarty and Brendan Shanahan. (Scot Shields and Brendan Donnelly of the Angels rounded out the panel, probably because no one gave a damn about the Tigers back then.) The question to McCarty: "What's the worst thing Shanny has ever done to you?" The answer, and Shanahan's response, are rather awesome:

Thanks to YouTube user Emmykn for this find. We're not sure how much footage from "Teammates" is floating around out there, but here's our request: There's an episode with Jeremy Roenick and Sean Burke, then of the Flyers, predicting how Keith Primeau will answer questions like, "Who's more likely to be a good luck charm in Vegas?" We smell comedy gold; any leads, please e-mail us.

He was offered more money from the Rangers then the Red Wings offered him. just like Ben Wallace did with the pistons look where it got him. I like Shanny too but he is greedy.

no, the rangers offered the same amount. i'm 99.9% sure of that. i was pissed at first and felt betrayed, but if he had stayed, Helm or Hudler would have had to stay at Grand Rapids another two years.

If we didn't offer him the money at first,I know we would have matched it.Shanny wanted to go to the Rangers to be near his wifes family if I'm remembering correctly, does'nt really matter,He left!!He was really a favorite here.I'd love to see him back, but he is getting older also, and we have so many really good younger players playing so well now.I really don't think he was greedy tho,you can't compare him to Wallace!! Wallace really took the heart of the Pistons, and he really got a ton of money for it.

C'mon New Blood, where's your sense of history? Gordie and Ted are old farts, but they were GREAT Red Wings! Celebrate the tradition man!

This was a great video clip. I'd love to find the full episode.
Shanny was a great Wing. When the Rangers come to town (not Detroit), I get tix just to watch him play. Ofcourse I'm not rooting for the Rangers, but he's a great player that I grew up watching.
I bet he has at least 1 more good year of play in him. I hope he does come back to Detroit. It'd be awesome to see him skate in the red and white one more time. Go Wings!!!!

Greg's naked stretching was always a problem at FanHouse.
It was, in fact, the problem.

I am from Pittsburgh, with an "h".
That's not much my problem however.
That was the worst attempt at a joke, at least some of your fellow Wings fans had more creative terms for the city.
I'm willing to bet that you are overweight Sandy, just my guess.

It's so true. I was naked stretching all the time in the FanHouse. The only guy who never seemed to mind was Schultz.

Sorry,I didn't really mean to knock your city,or your team .I think we both have great hockey teams. I'm not overweight!!, today is my first time on a Blog. I love creativity from both teams & cities!!! I love the game and love the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Of course I want the Wings to win,but if the Pens won, they would deserve it,they have come a long way in the last few years, and have some great players who will be around a long time.Good Luck on your team
