Puck Daddy - NHL

One of the reasons the Sean Avery signing last summer seemed a little superfluous for the Dallas Stars was because they already had one of the NHL's preeminent pests in Steve Ott.

We're talking about a guy so dedicated to the dark arts of human agitation that he studied "sensitive phrases" in Russian, Swedish, Finnish, German, French and Czech just to tick off opponents in the 2001 World Junior championship tournament.

In last night's 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers, Ott lit the fuse for a rather wild scene in the third period. On the forecheck, he nailed defenseman Tom Gilbert up high for a clear interference penalty. That prompted Oilers goalie Dwayne Roloson (!) to skate over and knock Ott down. (We can only assume this was in preparation for Rolo's finishing move, the paddle to the berries.)

With Ott on the ice, Ladislav Smid skated over and ... we don't know. Coddled him? Asked him for a horsey ride? Meanwhile, Ethan Moreau dropped his mitts and skated in to jump on the pile, attempting to pull Ott out for some retribution while giving him a cheap shot while Ott was kneeling on the ice. Later, Nicklas Grossman won a short altercation with Moreau by "pinning" him. Dallas hasn't seen this much wrestling since the heyday of the Von Erich clan.

Here's the sometimes-hilarious action from last night, which led to a ton of penalties:

Stars writer Mike Heika watched the game from home, and thinks he saw some more of that infamous Ott wit after a Dallas goal:

On the faceoff after Jere Lehtinen's goal, I could swear that Steve Ott was saying "Hey" to his Oilers opponent as the goal song played. He wasn't shouting, he was sort of whispering to the guy, who was inches away. It was 4-2, and Ott was just digging the dagger in. It was like, "da da da da da da," and then Ott would just smile with that smart-alec smile of his and say, "Hey." The guy reminds me of Butch and Woim from the Little Rascals

Butch and Woim? Sounds otay to us.

"The guy reminds me of Butch and Woim from the Little Rascals"
From that first picture he reminds me of the guy who played Steve the Pirate and the 'E' exec in Knocked Up. "We didn't say lose weight... I might say tighten. "

Ott is a great pest. I know this because I hate him. I really want boogaard to get a piece of him one of these days, and put him out for a season or two.
Because he cheap shots real hockey players.

Life is good when Kerry, Kevin, David and Fritz are mentioned.
All we needed to complete that scuffle was an IceMan King Parsons butt-butt.

I agree, Ott is a cheap shot artist. And because of that, I enjoy seeing him get his a$$ handed to him from time to time.
Lots of great hits in that game from both sides.

Steve Ott is amazing. He is an excellent pest and he makes the games really fun to watch.
If you think he cheap shots "real" hockey players, hopefully you watched the game last night and saw the crap that the Oilers were pulling on some of our guys.
Ethan Moreau is a thug. I'd much rather have an entertaining pest like Ott on my team, than a dirty thug like Moreau. He was cheap shotting everyone last night. He should've gotten tossed way before that altercation in the 3rd.

Obviously, Ott's hit was a penalty, but what is Roloson getting involved for. Someone needs to teach him a lesson, he is always at the fore front of cheap shots and dirty hits.

I would hate to be Ott's teammate. How can you stick up for a guy who pulls stuff like this?

All that hit was was about a second or two later than it should've been. It wasn't dirty or an obvious attempt at going after someone's head. It was just a solid late hit in a game full of cheap shots that made that look like a love tap. And it was followed up by Roloson's cheap shot and two Oilers jumping on top of Ott while he was down and punching him. You tell me who was dirtier in that scrum. Ott or all of the Oilers?

i mean, watch the video and see the cross checks to the back and elbows that were thrown by edmonton and those weren't even all of them.
you should've seen when moreau went and punched ribeiro in the face down by the end boards and the referee gave both of them a penalty. it was clearly a cheap shot by moreau and ribeiro ended up with 4 penalty minutes for getting punched and arguing about getting a penalty for it.

2 things in regards to that vid:
    1) The NES Punch Out song is bad ass fight music. Nice catch Exit56!
    2) Is MMA the new fighting wave in the NHL? Ground and pound!

and you're kind of a prick for even talking about bertuzzi and "going bertuzzi". ott is nowhere near a cheap shot artist when compared to that clown. he should've gotten banned for life for ending that guy's career.

I rarely even think about the Dallas stars, and while I do love Modano and all he's done throughout his career, I think the original post is right on. They don't need Avery when they have Ott. Every game I've ever seen him play, Ott is starting s**t after the play and taking little shots at players (like this one.) EVERY SHIFT. He never drops 'em, and he doesn't get called for half of what he does--which means he's VERY good at playing his role. He's the definition of an agitator, without all the wacky hijinks Avery brings to the table. And if the Stars are down by a few in the third, watch out--he will start crap with ANYONE to get his team back in the game. As easy as he is to hate, it's nice to see players like this still exist in the NHL. Would I love to see him get the crap pummeled out of him? Yeah, he deserves it as much as anyone I can name. Will I keep tuning in, waitng for it to happen? you bet!

They didn't show it on camera, but I'm glad Fistric went ahead and fought Erik Cole a bit after that scrum calmed down. He needed to get hit after tackling Modano from behind earlier in the game. You can see them kinda hanging onto each other in the background while the other crap was going on

My intent was not to compare Ott to Bertuzzi. I feel that someday a player will re-act in a Bertuzzi type manner, hang the code and go offon Ott. I also agree Bertuzzi should never have been allowed to play again.

Ya I can't believe they let Bertuzzi back in. Wouldn't it be something if the Stars finished in 6th and got matched up against him and the Flames in the first round?
Of course...I don't recall what that one guy did that caused anyone to want to jump onto him and cheap shot him like Bertuzzi did.

Not that I'm a fan, but I always thought that Ott was one of the less "cheap" instigators out there. At least he can stick up for himself quite well, as proven by his one-punch knock out of Ruslan Salei last spring.
