Seventeen years later, some of the spectators who crammed the streets to watch the Canucks' 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 decided to repeat those ugly scenes.
Police have declared the downtown fan zone area near the CBC building and the central post office a riot zone, Ian Hanomansing of CBC News reported. Anyone not leaving the West Georgia Street area immediately would be arrested, they warned.
Problems started in the closing seconds of the game when a thick plume of smoke, believed to be from fireworks, wafted above the crowd on West Georgia Street in front of the central post office building. Moments later, a car burst into flames and fights broke out.
B.C. Ambulance confirmed that a man had fallen or jumped off a bridge called the Dunsmuir Viaduct and had been taken to hospital.
Fans lit a car on fire, set off fireworks and engaged in a flurry of fistfights in the fan zone in downtown Vancouver after the Canucks lost the final game of the Stanley Cup 4-0 to the Boston Bruins.
No injuries were reported, but there were several arrests. Another fire believed to be in a garbage can sent a plume of smoke above the crowd in the closing seconds of the game.
Vancouver police didn't anticipate behavior that reached the chaotic levels of the 1994 riots, but called in reinforcements from outside of Vancouver to help handle the crowds.
UPDATE: The rioting has spread, sadly. The Province has an ongoing blog chronicling the mayhem.

No, wait, this is why you don't get involved with riots:
Well of course there's a Habs fan. You always need an expert on the scene.
Finally, police are asking people to upload photos of rioters to Facebook so they can be ID'd.
