There's no question that this is a wicked junior hockey attack by Oshawa Generals captain (!) James Delory on Kingston Frontenacs center and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Nathan Moon. But context is key when it comes to controversial incidents on the ice, and there's no question that Moon instigates the incident at the 57-second mark with a slash on Delory. That said, the punishment didn't exactly fit the crime:

Here's how Faceoff Factor, which hosted the video, saw it:

During a hard fought battle against the Oshawa Generals, Moon was the recipient of a hard slash and cheap shot by Oshawa captain James Delory. Moon slashed Delory, who returned with a vicious shot to the leg and a blow to the head of a vulnerable Nathan Moon.

This year especially, Nathan Moon has been much more active with his stick behind the play. He's been jarring with players and showing a lot of fire, fire that is often times given the form of a slash or poke to agitate an opponent. That being said, what happened to Moon in this scenario is beyond uncalled for. Delory has a history of finding his way onto the suspension sheet and is facing a long sit for this incident.

Neither of these guys is a saint: As Faceoff Factor said, Moon's a chippy player and Delory's been called "the Panthers' potential future tough-guy."

Moon would return to last Friday's game against the Generals; Delory, a Florida Panthers prospect, was given a match major for slashing and a major for fighting, putting him in line for league disciplinary action. He also gets 40 lashes with a wet noodle for celebrating after the fight, which really isn't a Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger level of captaincy.

But doesn't this whole thing trace back to Moon acting like a petulant child after a clean hit, slashing a player who didn't hit him to spark an admittedly overboard (like a lost episode of "Marc Crawford's Bertuzzi Babies") bit of retribution?

With all this talk about what to do about fighting, here's a thought: punish the actual instigator once in a while, no matter how politically incorrect it'll look as he limps to the bench in agony.

H/T to our boys at The Pensblog.

That one is a tough call...I can somewhat empathize with Delory. I get extremely mad when I get a cheap shot when I play. Slashes to the ankles can be problematic, as Moon can probably attest following the one he received before being pummeled. So, I don't know. Delory was reacting to someone purposefully trying to injure him. I can't say I wouldn't have reacted the same way.

Moon shouldn't have slashed Delory, since you know, he didn't hit him. But Delory definitely didn't have to pull that nonsense, that's ugly. That's like suit shorts ugly.

Heres a thought: Greg you are a moron, which is what we have come to expect from your columns, I could see how you would support such a cowardly act....I'd love to do that to you actually.....only I'd atleast do it while you were facing me.....unlike this VAG that slashes him from behind and then punches him while he is holding his leg....Yeah, he has a promising future, maybe he should grow a set first.....I see how you can relate to him, you sit down to pee as well...

The guys play for Kingston and Oshawa - they probably have some pent-up sexual agression for all the ugly chicks they have to deal with on a regular basis at home games.

I think A-Rod should inject both of them and teach them the secret to having luscious purple lips. Wysh, since you have mentioned many wrestlers lately, you need to fit a Val Venus or Randy Savage reference. By the way, Macho Man is a PIMP!

I agree w/ GT on this. Why slash someone after you get hit legally? He may have had the eye for an eye slash coming, and if you do it to the wrong guy, you probably will pay the piper. I'm not saying dismiss either of them,
I would suspend them both, but in my mind Moon gets the lesser suspension. the question is, were either slashes called as minors?

does this commentator have any idea what it means to "submarine" a guy?
that being said, i can relate to the two-hander, but the extra punch to the melon when he is down was over the line.

I find it hilarious that a goon like that is actually given the A to wear. If he's the assistant I'd hate to see how the captain behaves.
Notice his acknowledging the crowd afterward, like what he did was "cool?" That's because there's no fear of consequence.
What a wet, floppy douche bag.

Chris C - He said the punishment didn't fit the crime. Do you retain what you read? He never said it was right, he just stated that the instigator should have gotten a penalty as well, which is true. A lot of this garbage could be avoided if the officials are doing the job they are paid to do. If you think Greg is a moron why do you visit the blogs somewhat regularly. His job is to bring these things to light and we are to comment on them. Sure he injects his opinion but for you to attack him for it is a$$anign. Grow up its a conversation......Wysh should put a disclaimer on his posts that says this is for adults and entertainment only. Sorry Chris but your not tall enough for this ride.

I like my hockey dirty, and agree that the guy instigated with a dude who had nothing to do with the hit and should get some kind of suspension. What did he expect after slashing this guy? Flowers? He deserved what he got.

Moon does NOT deserve a suspension for the slash, nor did he deserve this attack. You know what he deserved? Two minutes in the penalty box.

If you have ever laced em up Chris, nothing raises pitch faster than getting a stick penalty (slash, pitchfork, butt end) for apparently no reason. Especially one a knee or groin, and i am curious what you watched since the initial slash was knee high. I do not agree with the punches on the ice, i do not agree with any of it, but i can at least relate to what happened.

How much is the tuition at the Bertuzzi School of Despicable Acts On The Ice?
That was a vicious retaliation and deserves a severe punishment. However Moon should be held responsible as well, with his instigating slash. These kinds of things should be addressed within a players contract, these guys are the property of NHL teams and they need to step up and let these players know that this will not be tolerated at any level of play.

Slashes like that happen on a regular basis. The refs missed the boat and should have given Moon a 2 minute jobber penalty, but that in no way justifies the retaliation. Square up with the guy and deal with it. If this would've ended up like Bertuzzi's hit on Moore, then there'd be no question about the retaliation. Why is it that we have to wait for a guy to be paralyzed before we clearly deem that a punch in the back of the head has mal-intent?

Call the initial slash obviously, it was uncalled from that angle it doesnt look nasty or intent to injure, just looks like he didn't like the hit, though it was clean, which is whatever some guys do that. (It seems like he though Delroy hit him? if you watch the player who delivers the hit skates away and Delroy glides in right where he was) Delory slashes back pretty damn hard though, maybe had he let it go there and gave Moon a chance to get up or square up, but the shot to the back of the head is bad, THEN the shot he throws while Moon is laying face down on the ice is worse. I don't think Moon's intent was to slash a guy that didn't hit him, possibly just confused but it was a clean hit regardless so I don't see a problem in making an example and punishing him, but you better come down pretty hard on Delroy.

Moon's was a love tap and Delory's was a baseball swing and an attack from behind. The leg slash is a penalty and should be called , but that is one reason players wear shin pads. I played high school & college hockey and I used to see guys break sticks over players (cross- checks & slashes) all the time. The worst was when players used to give you a butt end to the side ribs. But, I never came back and attacked someone from behind. If your going to fight someone, square up and dropped the gloves. Don't sucker punch from behind. Delory deserves a suspension.

Faceoff-Factor.com here, I wouldn't even call Moon a chippy player, he's just become a real snippy behind the play at times. His team is 11-32 and the frustration is boiling over. I'd like to hear the you guys comment on the lack of support Moon received from his teammates after the incident.
