Mention defenseman Randy Jones of the Philadelphia Flyers to a Boston Bruins fan, and the reaction isn't going to be pleasant. Jones is the guy who concussed Bruins center Patrice Bergeron on an infamous hit back in 2007, threatening the promising young player's career and receiving just two games-worth of suspension for it from the NHL.
In tonight's game between the Flyers and the Bruins, Boston tough guy Milan Lucic sent Jones into the end boards with a forearm from behind. The Philadelphia crowd went wild, looking for a penalty ... and Bruins announcer Jack Edwards of NESN noted the irony in their desire for justice.
OK, not so much "noted" as cackled like a maniac:
For those who can't play the video, Edwards said: "Lucic hammers him! Down goes Jones! And how's this for irony: The crowd wants a call for a hit from behind! AH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!"
(It reads much more accurately if you imagine the laughing in giant cartoon letters, like after The Joker uses a joy-buzzer in a Batman comic.)
Thanks to Puck Buddies Jay and Nathan for the heads-up on the clip. As Nathan noted, "Later NESN went to commercial and Edwards led out with ‘cry me a river' while the hit was being shown." He's not Puck Daddy's favorite homer announcer for nothing.
If nothing else, the former ESPN announcer has given the world a few more potential squares for Jack Edwards Bingo; like "mock opposing fans' hypocritical indignation" or "laugh sarcastically until sanity is legitimately questioned."

Name one then, instead of yammering on.
I love this notion of article quotas that's suddenly popped up in the comments. Like I'm a cop giving out speeding tickets on the last day of the month.

Randy Jones never meant to hurt Bergeron that bad. It happens. Randy Jones isn't a cheap player. It's pretty lame that Bergeron never accepted his apology either.
I'm pretty sure Jim Jackson would be concerned for the health of Jones if he was the Bruins announcer, not laughed at him.

When it comes to the Flyers, people are content to live in the past. It doesn't matter what happened 30 years ago, 15 years ago, or last year. It's done. Let's live in the present, folks.
That being said, that clip was still funny. Even as a Flyers fan, I'd have laughed if I were watching the Boston broadcast.

randy jones is a known dirty player.
and if he wasnt trying to hurt bergeron, he wouldn't have gone in with a crosscheck to the back of bergeron's head!
i got no complaints about edwards here. he was laughing at the fans who wanted a call.
and randy jones deserves a good knock from a few people, not just the bruins.
i find it funny that the same fans that defended jones' cheap hit last year are complaining about this. cant have it both ways sunshine

Calling another region's announcers bad is apparently a time-honored tradition.

I took "violent" out of the headline, because I felt it was getting in the way of the purpose of this post, which is to revel in the insanity of Jack Edwards. Please continue.
