Puck Daddy - NHL

This whole NHL vs. the Detroit Red Wings thing has certainly escalated quickly, hasn't it? It's like the news team fight from "Anchorman," only funnier (someone called us "Puck Mommy") and with less trident-throwing.

The latest on Gary Bettman's mission to rig the season against the Stanley Cup champions* by making Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom sit out one game is that the NHLPA is going to file a grievance in the case; mostly to clarify the NHL's policy on players choosing to miss the NHL All-Star Weekend due to injury.

That's a fair point, unlike the complaints from Red Wings fans that these players were somehow ambushed by a swiftly invented disciplinary rule with no recourse. The story broke on Friday; the first commercial airline flight in the United States was in 1914.** They, and their team, could have avoided this. There's no getting around that fact.

Anyway, enough with the tension. It's in times like these that we turn to Steve Dangle, friend of Puck Daddy and YouTube comedy celebrity, for his take on these matters. Here's Dangle and friends on the Red Wings suspensions:

Bonus clip from the man who gave the world Mats Sundin at the drive-thru: Here's Roberto Luongo on rules changes:

* We don't actually believe this, but it's fun to play into the bizarre inferiority complex for fans of the most popular franchise in hockey and the reigning champions in hockey.

Everyone enjoy this while you can, because yet again this summer we will be drinking out of a big silver cup, while you sit at home and wish your team could even be mentioned in the same breath as us.

I'd say that calling it a bizarre persecution complex would be more accurate. I have yet to encounter a Wings fan who doesn't think that the NHL as we know it would crumble without the presence of the almighty winged wheel.

"Nick Lidstrom, come get the Stanley Cup."
Remembering that is pretty much the only thing keeping me from being upset about this whole thing. I hope he has to say it again.

First, I love how Lidstrom is saying now "no one told me!" That is probably true. His GM told the world on Friday that he wasn't going to bother to tell him. So, it's not the NHL's fault his GM decided to get all righteously indignant and have "too much respect" for him to tell him to get his butt moving or sit out a next game.
Second, in the end of that second video, dude really got Crosby's voice down. Extra points if he can duplicate the annoying laugh.

@Wyshynski: I've long said that "Detroit Red Wings Fandom" needs to be added to the next DSM (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). It borders on pathological. And it's too bad, 'cause the team is absolutely awesome.

Forgive us Detroit Red Wings fans and the city of Detroit. Look where we have to live!! What else do we have that represents world class excellence, that we can defend proudly? The Lions? The new look Pistons with AI? The Big 3? Our great mayor, err, former mayor, who is at this moment sitting in Wayne County Jail?
We have a chip on our shoulder about everything, and have the permanent Rodney Dangerfield complex, I tell ya we don't get no respect. However, as far as slights to us or our team, and/or consipiracies against us, this ranks as a 0 to me. If they're already hurt, what's one more game off but more time to heal up and prepare for another playoff run. That's all this is. Not like they'll be needed against Columbus anyway.

Hmmmm...insulting Wings fans, whom comprise a large portion of your blog's viewership? It seems your marketing savvy is parallel to the NHL's. We Wings fans might be a bit arrogant and obnoxious. But being arrogant and obnoxious about a winning team is at least better than being an arrogant, obnoxious fan of a suck team (I'm looking at you Toronto). Not a good weekend to be a Wings and MSU fan.

Maybe they should give them out at the next Wings game.

Hey Wysh. It was on Detroit radio that Gary Bettman called Sidney Crosby and told him how to avoid being suspended for a game, but he didn't call Lidstrom or Datsyuk. Can you check with your sources to verify whether this is true? Also, shouldn't the fact that Datsyuk was injured during the last game before break and did not play most of the third period be taken into account? If not, heaven forbid an All-Star get injured during that final game....
Besides, neither Wing was voted in, so apparently no one wanted to see them anyways :)

I concur with Jethro Bodean about the state of the State of Michigan. The Wings is all we really have. Please, let us have that. Even my MSU hockey team sucks this year.
Why all the hatred for the Wings, when we should united in our hatred of Gary Bettman? Don't you see? This is exactly what he wants! The Truth is out there....

The first picture is from future, it presents new member of Detroit Red Wings, Marian Gaborik, who'll sign with Detroit after the better and more functional Marian decided to sign with Canucks for 20$/year. He's getting ready for the first practice with his new team by stretching his groins.

The players could have shown up and not played, just like Crosby did, and they wouldn't be being forced to sit a game (or suspended or whatever they are calling it). This is the Red Wings own stupid fault.
The league needs the stars there to market them. They can rest up. They don't have to do 24 hours of interviews or play in the game. Just show up for a few spots, wave to the crowd during introductions, say thanks, cash check, and go home.
    Whaaa.

it seems as if everyone hates a succesful franchise. when was the last time the wings missed the playoffs? was it 1986? how many teams can say that in the modern era?
So if there is any animosity towards detroit, its because of their success! Sorry Espn (btw your coach of the year choice of barry melrose?!?!?) detroit is set up talent wise for many years to come. Players even take pay cuts to come here, that should say it all. As betty tries to taut Crosby as the poster child for hockey while there are much better players out there (not crosby's fault) . When th egreat one was the man, he was always 50 points ahead of the competition and stood out like a baby ruth in the punch bowl. not such the case now as no one sticks out like gretzky did.
