The ramifications of Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Shane O'Brien's hair-trigger benching by Coach Barry Melrose have come to pass: He and recently demoted winger Michel Ouellet were traded to the Vancouver Canucks for defenseman Lukas Krajicek and minor league winger Juraj Simek.

With a cap hit of $1.25 million, Ouellet was a spare part Tampa was eager to deal. O'Brien has a $950,000 hit, and Krajicek's is $1.1 million.

After giving up four goals on 80 shots in two losses to the New York Rangers, have we seen our first panic move from the Lightning?

Matt Carle, Jamie Heward, Mike Lundin, Andrej Meszaros, Vladmir Mihalik and Janne Niskala were the starting defensemen in the second game of the season. Adding a veteran like Krajicek upgrades one of the team's pairings. He's a veteran at 25, and can give the team more than the 18 minutes and change he's averaged with the Vancouver Canucks. He's a pro.

That said, this trade, more than anything, defines what a Melrose/Koules/Barrie defense is going to look like. O'Brien was the team's tough guy on defense; Krajicek has been accused in the past of not playing up to the physical promise of his size. (In that sense, he's a bit like Mihalik, though not the 6-7 sleeping giant Vlad is).

We all know lightning isn't thunder; and the Tampa Bay Lightning's defense isn't going to rumble through anyone; especially without O'Brien and a guy like Alex Picard, who was traded to Ottawa.

Can a team that doesn't have a legit physical presence on defense compete in the Southeast Division, where every other team has its physical offensive forces (yes, even Florida)?

The real question is whether Melrose's system is effective enough to overcome that physical deficiency, and if the Lightning are willing to put in the effort to play a total team defense.

Because after two games, the effort clearly isn't there outside of the Gratton line.

We were supposed to be the team everyone was afraid to play per Melrose. After just two games I bet there isn't an NHL team that isn't chopping at the bit to play the Bolts. Good Lord!

I've always thought Krajicek was under-rated. Good for him.

Serious question. I seldom get to see tape of VAN games.
How is O'Brien different then Bieska?

It looks to be a long season in Tampa if all they are gonna do is make trades.

Lightning do not have a nasty streak inside their own blue line, trading OB assures that that phrase remains. What is the makeup of the D? its not speed, its not physical, its not the ability to move the puck out of their zone with any efficiency. Question is what will the present D morph into?

More of the Mullet and his ESPN coaching..........trades don't win games...good coaching and players who want to win no matter what the odds and size of the other team........just shows what a lot of cash and no class will get you...oh well ...we might have something to root for next year...

Oullet shouldn't have been demoted. I don't get how Melrsoe can bench a guy that scored 36 pts last season. In some ways I wish the pens still had him. We could kinda use him right now considering the injuries we currently have. Tampa is going to be the laughing stalk of the league yet again this season.

Also getting out shot 40-16 like they were in the first game against the Rangers sends a sign that this is a bad hockey team. You can't win by getting out shot like that against anyone.

So...you have a problem with defense. The opposing team is taking liberty with your goalie. Solution?.....Send your toughest biggest defenseman to Vancouver for a smaller one. Barry....I think it is time to cut your hair and get back doing analysis where they can prompt you.

I guess they didn't like the movie Slapshot and chose to go in the exact opposite direction.

in response to post 4 (Carl_v_Mastershake) Bieksa can actually get his name on the scoresheet 1-2 x's a game , and not just in the PIM's category.... He was just injured for most of last season...

That's true, O'Brien certainly isn't the second coming of Paul Coffey or anything.

In the 2 games this past weekend, the Bolts had the same problem as last year: 1) We gave up the blue line way too easy & 2) We did not move guys from the net. These can be changed with COACHING!! I just hope Melrose knows it.

Tampa's 2 games with the Rangers weren't nearly as close as the final scores. They looked overmatched and Lacavalier is not in tip-top shape it seems. Its gonna be a very long season in Tampa I think.

its only 2 games. the levac, st. louis, prospal line is fine. i think tampa's goaltending is solid. smith did get lucky a couple times but overall i believe they fixed that issue. tampa's defense needs to be more aggressive. make the other team make the mistakes and let your goalie cover your butt if you mess up. shoot the puck! i think the 2nd line should be everyone's concern. with out depth you have no team. if the 2nd line doesnt come together and start scoring then thats when its gonna be a long season. lets hope malone is worth what they signed him for. he needs to prove it, and the 1st two games dont show he deserves it. let the physical presence come from gratton, arty and roberts, yes roberts. hes a big guy and showed that he can still be physical and make smart plays. he is def one of their best off-season moves.

What does the Tampa PP look like on defence?
